Math CAMMP

July  16 – July 20 • 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. • Rising 1 – 6 • $300

Instructors: Dr. Cece Toole, Assistant Professor at Meredith College; Ms. Cara Musumeci, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools; Mr. Matthew Green, Math CAMMP Staff

Christ Church Episcopal School is proud to host the nationally acclaimed Math CAMMP (Comprehensively Applied Manipulative Mathematics Program) developed by UNCC professors Dr. Michael Green and Dr. Jack Piel. Summer Math CAMMP emphasizes three basic principles: having fun, learning through hands-on manipulatives, and problem-solving. The entire curriculum reflects these principles as students develop a head start for the upcoming school year. Whether your child is a math whiz or needs review, the CAMMP experience produces logical understanding and helps children find the fun in mathematics.

CAMMP’s philosophy is to enhance your child’s genuine understanding of mathematics and its connections to thinking, reasoning, and real world problem solving.  Individual attention is given to each CAMMPer by specially trained master level teachers.  Students are typically placed according to their rising grade level.  However, for those doing more advanced mathematics or in need of remediation, appropriate math placements are made.  Changes in placements will occur after the first day of camp, giving the teachers an opportunity to work with each child and assess the appropriate placement.

Students enrolled in Math CAMMP will also be involved in Robotics.  CAMMPers will use LEGO Mindstorms to simulate real life robotics and robotic systems.  Materials will be available from simple constructions to more complex constructions using programming software.  Matthew Green is the Robotics instructor and brings experience and knowledge from the Robotics program at Stanford University.  Robotics groups will be based on rising grade level but changes in groups can be made based on experience using these materials.

Basic Robotics (Grades 1 – 3) CAMMPers learn the basics of simple, repetitive-motion machines.  Each CAMMPer will build and operate both manually and battery powered machines for land and water.

Advanced Robotics (Grades 4 – 6) CAMMPers build complex machines that operate on batteries, electricity, and solar power.  More advanced students design computer programs to control the timing, sequencing, and motions of these complex machines.

SAT Preparation Course

July 9 – 27 • 9 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Rising 10 – 12 • $450/3 weeks

Instructors:Barbara Carter, CCES English Department Chair; David Wilcox, CCES Upper School Math Teacher

This course not only prepares participants for the SAT, but will strengthen their overall academic performance.  The study skills and analytical approaches covered in this course can be employed daily in all academic disciplines.  Attendance at each session and a good work ethic are requirements for success in this course.

During this course, participants will engage in practice exercises and review to improve their SAT performance.  These sessions are equally divided between reviewing verbal and math skills. Participants will take two SATs that are scored and analyzed during the first and last sessions.  During the second week, a PSAT and an ACT will also be taken and analyzed so that the student will have a full profile of his or her abilities on these three types of standardized tests.  These analyses will pinpoint individual weaknesses and enable the student to focus intently on needed areas of improvement.

Instruction will also emphasize improving skills already taught in the classroom environment.  The verbal sessions will concentrate on skills relating to grammar and structure, sentence completion, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.  Skills necessary for effective essay writing will also be covered.  The math sessions will review topics in algebra and geometry covered on the SAT; there will be extensive practice with the format of the test.  Practice is also given in gridded and free response answers in math, and emphasis is placed on calculator usage.

In addition, one session led by the CCES College Counseling department will provide valuable suggestions on how students may best present themselves to colleges and how to choose the colleges that are right for them.

Biblical Studies

June 18 – 29  • 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. • Rising 9 – 11 • $750

Unit of Credit: 1/2 Unit

Instructor: Thomas Shingler, Upper School Religion Teacher

*This class is only open to enrolled CCES students.

This one semester required study of the Old and New Testaments focuses on the historical context and theological themes of the Bible. This establishes a connection between the Hebrew people and the Christian Church, thereby creating an archetypal synthesis that ultimately points to the message of the Gospels: Jesus’ birth, baptism, ministry of teaching and healing, death, and resurrection. The connection also establishes a contemporary and eternal relevance to life in the world today.  At the end of class, students will complete an approved independent study project that will be presented to Mr. Shingler during the week of August 6-10, by appointment.  Students who plan to fill their school year schedules with other electives are permitted to take this course. No class meetings may be missed in order to receive credit.

Physical Education I

Unit of Credit: 1/2 Unit

Instructor:Sally Pielou, Upper School Physical Education Teacher

*This class is only open to enrolled CCES students.

This course introduces the student to the concept of physical fitness through health and skill related components.  The program consists of instruction in physical fitness activities, lifetime sports, team sports, and health wellness.  Students who plan to fill their school year schedules with other electives are permitted to take this course.  In order to receive credit, students may not miss any class session during the on-campus week.  Additional components of the course will be taught via weekly personal reflections and an activity journal.  These items must be turned in on a weekly basis during the summer, beginning after their introduction at a mandatory class meeting in May 2012.
