Sarah
Gail Richards of Briar Rose Stained Glass in Seneca, South
Carolina, spent the week of March 10-14 working with students in
the Lower School on a variety of stained glass projects. Ms. Richards
is the recipient of numerous awards and commissions for her designs,
and her pieces have been installed in private and public locations
throughout the state, including Westminster Elementary School and
First Baptist Church in Belton.
Students in grades P-4 made individual stained glass suncatchers.
Each class also made mosaic stepping stones for the Lower School
landscape. Each grade's project reflected a special topic of study
from this school year. Third-graders, for example, represented palmetto
trees, the state tree, relating to their study of South Carolina.
First-grade students created animal mosaics, and you will find charming
turtles and fish among their pieces. Fourth-graders executed two
themes: geometric designs for their suncatchers and fish for their
stepping stones.

Students pose with Art teacher Marilyn Wood and their stepping
stones
in the Thomas Gordon Small
Memorial Garden outside the Lower School.
The
students also enjoyed learning about the process of glass-making
from Ms. Richards. She talked with them about the history of stained
glass and introduced them to the beautiful work of Louis Comfort
Tiffany.

Lower
School art teacher Marilyn Wood also took the opportunity
to learn more about stained glass herself during Ms. Richards' residency.
Ms. Wood created a stained glass piece depicting the school seal.
She is shown here with the work-in-progress, which has yet to be
