"They [CCES faculty] made us believe that our efforts were
worth it; that setting big goals is the way to achieve big things.
I still feel programmed to work hard and achieve."
CCES
helped instill in me the value of volunteerism. I don't remember
the year, but I think I was a senior. I had to choose a volunteer
activity for school (maybe this was a senior project, I am not sure!).
I chose to drive Meals on Wheels one day a week. That experience
made a HUGE impact on me. I felt so much better after I had visited
with those elderly men and women each week, given of myself. That
experience led me to sign up as a volunteer at the hospital when
I went off to UVA. I volunteered in the rehabilitation unit there,
helping feed or bathe people who could not do that for themselves.
Some of those people had had operations, and would eventually be
able to help themselves again. One was a young guy, my age at the
time, had been in a motorcycle accident, and would never be able
to feed himself or walk again. That experience is something that
has stayed with me. I continued to volunteer in various capacities,
and I believe CCES helped instill that desire in me.
CCES
[also] helped me understand the value of hard work. Robin
Byrd, Charles Glennon, Barbara Carter, Diana Stafford and
many, many others encouraged us to do our best: to work hard, to
study hard, to practice hard. They made us believe that our efforts
were worth it; that setting big goals is the way to achieve big
things. I still feel programmed to work hard and achieve.
