She is blond-haired and blue-eyed.

Yet CCES softball coach Jennifer Numberger has been playing for two years with the WPJM All Stars, a Black American women’s recreational softball team fielded by the Christian Fellowship Church of Greer. She and CCES junior varsity softball coach Lesley Hart are the only non-African-American members of the team.

Passionate about softball, Coach Numberger was invited to play on the team by her former softball teammate at Spartanburg Methodist College, Mary Simpson, who now coaches basketball at Carolina High School.

This season, participating in approximately 20 tournaments held in Atlanta, Columbia, Rock Hill, Myrtle Beach, Cherokee and other locations in Georgia and the Carolinas, the competitive team scored its chance to enter the Black American Slowpitch World Series in Orlando, Florida.

On September 15 -17 WPJM (“We Play Jesus Music”), playing at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex (spring training site of the Atlanta Braves), emerged as champions of the 2006 USSSA Black American World Tournament.

Coach Numberger, who plays catcher, was named tournament Defensive MVP. Her award is listed on the USSSA website, along with team stats, at http://www.usssa.com/sports/FindPlayerHistory.asp?PlaID=969023 .

A total of 40 recreational teams from across the U.S. played in the double-elimination tournament.

We don’t know how many blond, blue-eyed players participated in the Black American tournament, but we do know one who earned her place as a series standout. Congratulations, Coach Numberger!
