"Let your light shine" was the theme of the Fourth Grade
Recognition ceremony held on Monday morning, May 28, in the Chapel
of the Good Shepherd. At its conclusion, as teary-eyed parents looked
on from the pews, fourth-graders processed from the chapel, each
one carrying a lit candle taper signifying their own "special
light" ignited in their years at the Lower School.
It was fitting, in this context, that the ceremony began with recognition
of a special teacher who has helped kindle the sparks of understanding
not only among her students, but also among her fellow teachers.
Headmaster Lee Cox and Daniel-Mickel Foundation
representative Charles Mickel presented the 2007-08
Lower School Master Teacher Award to a very surprised Cindy
Rogers, who teaches English to Speakers of Other Languages
(ESOL). The recognition comes with a monetary award of $2,500.
A 22-year teaching veteran, Rogers has been teaching for nine years
at CCES. In 2004 she was awarded a Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher
Fellowship and travelled to Japan for three weeks as an "ambassador
of understanding" between the U.S. and Japan.
Assistant Lower School Director Valerie Riddle
says of Mrs. Rogers, "She has such a beautiful way of incorporating
parts of the culture of other countries into her own life. Cindy
constantly brings to mind the 'international' theme. She helps us
see things from other perspectives and be more inclusive in our
teaching and our actions. She serves as a bridge for many cultures
and nationalities, and she does it with style and grace. She constantly
connects us with her students, their parents, their similarities
and differences. She has a way of honoring and respecting differences
rather than judging them."
Please join us in congratulating Master Teacher Cindy Rogers on
receiving this honor. Look for a more in-depth profile of her in
the next issue of Highlights.
