Materials

The Lower School Library collection houses 12,261 items. The collection is comprised of books, videos, books with cassettes and computer software. During the 2003-2004 school year, the library checked out 18,086 items!

Hours of Operation
The library is open during school hours. Each class has a library time each week, but students may come to the library with a teacher's permission at any time during the week to exchange books and/or conduct research.

Circulation
Primers check out one library book per week and return the book the next week to get another. Children in Grades 1-4 may take out up to two books at a time and may have up to four books out under their names. Books are due two weeks from checkout date. Overdue books are not fined, but children may not check out until overdue books are cleared. Students are given overdue notices during library class. A notice will be given for any books considered lost, and payment may be made by charge slip. Lost and paid books that are found and returned are credited to the account. Parents are encouraged to call the library office at extension 1260 if they are concerned about missing library books.

Book Fair

The school Book Fair is an opportunity for children to build home libraries with current books, while assisting our school library financially. A committee of parent volunteers working with the librarian publicizes and operates the fair. Volunteering for the book fair is a wonderful way to get to know other parents and children. The fair is held early in November each year and each class has a scheduled time to attend. Parents are invited to attend the fair at their children’s scheduled time to view the books with them. There is always a theme event for the children prior to the fair to build enthusiasm for reading.

Author Visit

To encourage appreciation of literature, each year the Lower School Library sponsors visiting authors or illustrators. The visits usually occur in the late winter or spring. and parents are invited to attend. Prior to the event, families are given the opportunity to purchase autographed books for home libraries. Parents will receive publicity and ordering information prior to the event.
