Angel wings and halos were askew.

The shepherds’ headgear came undone.

But the students were too busy during the Lower School’s annual Road to Bethlehem service project to let a few costume mishaps distract them from their mission.

There were placemats and candy poppers to make for the soup kitchen.

There were greeting cards and pillowcases to decorate for the nursing homes.

There were ornaments to create,

Christmas cheer to spread,

and mothers to hug. (Without our devoted class mothers, there would be no Road to Bethlehem!)

Part of the school’s Christian education program, the Road to Bethlehem “Christmas fair” allows students to re-enact the Holy Family’s journey to Bethlehem. Students begin by entering their names on the tax rolls

and paying their “taxes,” a donation of canned goods or supplies for local charities.

Then they traveled, some with staff in hand,

despite injury,

or advanced age,

to the Lower School lunchroom to busy themselves with the work of the Lord:

caring for the needy

and each other

and discovering the joy of serving their neighbors.

Along the road to Bethlehem, you would likely see many Lower School angels,

shepherds,

even kings,

and, certainly, many glowing faces

and wonderful smiles.
