Art
education in the Middle School is not just about learning to draw,
paint, or sculpt. Art is also about research, learning about science,
and community service.
An
example is the recent project to create murals that are now on display
at Clemson University. The fifth and sixth grade art elective students
accepted the challenge offered by the South Carolina Botanical Gardens
to create murals for the new décor in the Nature Learning
Center.
The
students, led by Middle School art teacher Brent Roberts,
began the task by collaborating on ideas for the subject of their
mural. They decided to paint a piedmont forest habitat depicting
the fall and spring seasons, and spent time researching the plants
and animals that would be found in this environment.

The
mural was done in acrylic on wood, and was completed over the last
three months of school. “The project not only was a collaborative
student art project, but it was also a service learning and nature
research project,” says Roberts.
Roberts
adds, “Murals are important because they bring art into public
places, and the visitors to the Nature Center will enjoy being in
a forest while indoors.”
