Six CCES Middle School students traveled the globe this summer on a two-week trip to England.

Middle School Assistant Nancy Scott and Coach Jennifer Numberger were thrilled to share the job of chaperoning the students on their trip.

Mrs. Scott was fascinated to see the juxtaposition of old and new. A new Starbucks is next door to the Christ Church Gateway at Canterbury Cathedral, which was built in the early 16th century.

The modern City Hall in London is located directly across the River Thames from the historic Tower of London.

Coach Numberger was intrigued by the mystery of Stonehenge.

The CCES group joined other students from independent schools around the United States at the Charterhouse School in the town of Godalming. The Charterhouse School was founded in 1611 and is one of nine original public schools in England.

Students traveled by bus to many parts of England for an overview of British culture. Some of the sights they enjoyed include the Houses of Parliament,

beautiful churches, including Winchester Cathedral,

Westminster Abbey, and

impressive castles, such as Arundel Castle,

where they ended up in the dungeon.

Students also had time to make friends with some of the natives.

They visited Greenwich, where they stood on the Prime Meridian,

and went back in time while at Warwick Castle where they enjoyed the pageantry and excitement of jousting and archery competitions.

They also had the chance to visit a current residence of the Royal Family, Windsor Castle.

On days when they did not travel, they had the opportunity to learn traditional English games, such as rugby and cricket.

This is the third year that CCES Middle School students have participated in the British Summer Program sponsored by The Independent Schools Cultural Alliance. It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to make new friends from different parts of the United States while exploring another country.
