"At dawn,
my family and I were heading out to Little River Inlet to go redfishing.
We were in our twenty-foot center console, and my mom and I had
made the rigs the previous night. We spooled our rods with twenty-pound
braided line, four-ounce sliding egg sinkers, a five-foot, fifty-pound
mono leader with 6/0 circle hooks."
The
start of the essay submitted for the 2006 Kids All-American Fishing
contest clearly demonstrates that sixth-grader Kerryn Stroud knows
a lot about fishing, but it wasn't only her prowess as an angler
that caused the judges to select her. Daniel Johnson, president
of Hooked on Fishing International (HOFI) places more emphasis on
finding young people who "actively seek to better themselves
and the communities in which they live."
Kerryn
fits that description perfectly. Her involvement is extensive, whether
packaging and shipping clothes for Hurricane Katrina victims, delivering
Meals on Wheels, working with children at A Child's Haven, or playing
bingo with nursing home residents. Many of her volunteer activities
are through the CCES Service Learning program. Kerryn is also active
as a junior varsity cheerleader, and is known throughout the school
for her clogging talents. Last year her clogging dance team won
the Overall Grand National Amateur Championship.
The judges at
Hooked on Fishing International (HOFI) felt strongly about her selection,
writing to her, "Given the number of qualified entries, you
are to be truly commended on the excellence of your application
package."
Certainly the
recommendation of Lower School Chaplain Valerie Riddle confirmed
their choice. "Kerryn is a model student, a model citizen and
human being. She has a depth beyond her years…her leadership
is one of quiet strength."
Kerryn was awarded a $5,000 U.S. Savings Bond and will also participate
in an all-expense-paid trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the summer of
2007 where she compete in the second annual Kids All-American Fishing
Challenge.
