the school's production of The King and I, which was performed
on May 16 and 17. More than 100 students were in the cast.
On
May 16 and 17 the Middle School performed Rodgers and Hammerstein's
beloved musical, The King and I, with a cast and crew of
more than one hundred students led by eighth-graders Smyth
McKissick as the King of Siam and Sarah Evert
as Anna Leonowens.
Set
in the early 1860s, the King wants his many children to be educated
for a changing world. With 63 brightly costumed Lower School students
participating in non-speaking parts as the King's children, the
March of the Siamese Children proved a grand and colorful highlight
of the show. This was the sixth musical play production by the Middle
School and the first to involve so many students from the Lower
School.
Other
leading parts were played by eighth-graders Elizabeth McDonald
as Tuptim, Virginia Offerle as Lady Thiang, and
Hamilton Timmons in dual roles as Kralahome and
Lun Tha. Fifth-grader William Windsperger played
the role of Prince Chululongkorn.
The
King and I was jointly directed by Lower School Music instructor
Rita Hughes, serving as Music Director, and Upper School
Spanish teacher Jennifer Mabry, serving as Director
of Drama and Choreography.
