It was a tight game, but in the end the sixth grade team pulled
out a 3,000 to 2,602 victory over their arch rivals, the fifth grade,
in the Reading Super Bowl.
Students
earned points for each book read. After completing a book, students
logged into the Accelerated Reader program to take a quiz, with
points awarded based on the number of correct answers, the reading
level of the book, and the number of pages in the book.
The
competition, which began on January 3, concluded February 2 with
the announcement of the final score at a special assembly. It was
followed by a "tailgate" party at lunch where the students
were treated to salad, pizza and football-shaped cakes. After the
tailgate celebration, the sixth grade team was presented with Super
Bowl rings in the form of light-up, ring-shaped lollipops.
When
it was all over, the 5th and 6th grades showed their appreciation
to Middle School Librarian Kay Daniel and Library
Aide Karen Polstra by writing notes thanking them
for organizing the contest and party. Based on their enthusiastic
notes, the Reading Super Bowl is destined to become an annual event.
Engraved
trophies were awarded to students based on points accumulated, quiz
scores and enthusiasm. Middle School Assistant Nancy Scott
was the only staff member to win an award: she received the Veteran's
Award for being the faculty/administrator with the most points.
