This year's Fall Sports Award Ceremony was well-attended.

In addition to the young athletes and their families, members of the family of Billy Richardson and the Class of 1981 were also there to enjoy the honors. Among the alumni present was former Olympic athlete Maylon Hanold, who flew in from Washington state to present the inaugural Billy Richardson Award.

The award, established to honor the memory of Billy Richardson ’81, is given to "a deserving member of the football team who best portrays the same qualities so admired in Billy Richardson, a member of the Class of 1981: a true team player who displays the utmost in sportsmanship and dedication to his team."

Ms. Hanold presented the award to senior Trey Mullikin.

Hanold, winner of the first Nuprin Award in 1990, given to her for coming back after an injury, is currently working on her doctoral dissertation at Harvard University on "Ultra Running: A Foucauldian Analysis of Female Body Experiences in High-Performance." In her remarks at the presentation of the Richardson award, she praised the "joy of sport," a trait she attributed to her former classmate, Richardson. She said, "understanding sport as a form of play reminds us that sport has an inherent value beyond winning, beyond the hard work, beyond the things we learn about teamwork, beyond the personal best goals." Indeed, the joy of sport was evident not only with the presentation of this award, but also in the many athletes honored during our fall sports award ceremonies on January 27. Click here for a list of all the fall sports award recipients.
