stories, and retelling stories.

Now only $99! Poetry For Fun
June 16 – 20 • 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. • Rising Grades K5 – 2 • $120/week

Instructor: Francee Levin, President of Levin Consultants & Adjunct Professor at USC
Young children learn that poetry is lots of fun for everyone. Starting with nursery rhymes and rhyming games,
children learn to listen, enjoy and eventually create simple poems. With Poems on Demand, children name
a topic, and Francee produces an instant poem on the spot. Children also learn the relationship of music to
poetry, since every song is a poem. Best of all, they develop listening and prewriting skills, as well as a love and
appreciation for poetry at an early age.

Now only $99! The Play’s the Thing
June 16 – 20 • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. • Rising Grades 3 – 5 • $120/week

Instructor: Francee Levin, President of Levin Consultants & Adjunct Professor at USC
Children use dramatic play and creative writing to develop and produce their own mini plays. Readers' Theatre
allows young writers to use scripts instead of learning lines and makes being on stage lots of fun for everyone.
Working in groups, the children create their own plays, which improve their writing skills and self-confidence.
Also included are theatre games, charades, pantomime, and more. The objective is to stimulate, improve basic
writing skills, create, and most of all, to have fun!

Instructors: Sally Henley, CCES Middle School Math Instructor
Paula Merwin, CCES Middle School Reading Instructor
This program is an excellent opportunity, both for students who are new to the school and for returning students,
to brush up on math and English skills. Mrs. Henley, curriculum coordinator for Middle School mathematics,
uses a hands-on approach to review problem-solving, decimals, fractions, and percentages. Mrs. Merwin, who
teaches the English portion of the program, will review parts of speech, mechanics, reading comprehension,
and written expression skills. Through the use of language puzzles, drills, and competitive games, students will
refresh and improve their language skills and confidence.

We Must Remember: A Holocaust Study
June 9 – 13 • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. • Rising Grades 6 – 8 • $150/week

Instructor: Kristin Westberg, Middle School Writing Teacher

from this time in History. Using Four Perfect Pebbles: A Holocaust Story by Marion Blumenthal Lazan as the
basis for the course study, middle school students will have the opportunity to complete a summer reading book,
all while receiving a thorough understanding of the Holocaust and an opportunity to reflect on what this course
means to them personally and as members of the human race. Students must purchase before the class and
bring with them Four Perfect Pebbles: A Holocaust Story.

Math CAMMP
July 7 – 11 • 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. • Rising Grades 1 – 7 • $275/week

Instructors: Math CAMMP Directors
Engage your child in thinking mathematically, from arithmetic through algebra and geometry. Mathematics
is brought to life through problem-solving with CAMMP manipulatives, games and puzzles, computers and
calculators. Each CAMMPer receives individual attention from a specially trained master level teacher.

Summer Camp emphasizes three basic principles: having fun, learning through hands-on manipulatives, and
problem-solving. The entire curriculum reflects these principles as students develop a head start for the
upcoming school year.
The rising grades will focus on the following:
• Rising 1st – Addition,
• Rising 2nd – Multiplication
• Rising 3rd – Subtraction
• Rising 4th – Division/Fractions
• Rising 5th – Operations on fractions and decimals
• Rising 6th – Pre-Algebra (integers, variables, constants)
• Rising 7th – Algebra (equations, functions with graphing calculators)
Students are typically placed according to their rising grade level. However, for those doing more advanced
mathematics or in need of remediation, appropriate math placements are made.

SAT PREP

SAT Preparation Course
July 14 – Aug 1 • 9 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. • Rising Grades 10 -12 • $425/3 weeks

Instructors: Barbara Carter, CCES English Department Chair
Anne Barber, CCES Math Teacher
This course not only prepares students for the SAT but will also strengthen their overall academic performance.
The study skills and analytical approaches covered in this course can be employed daily in all academic disciplines.
Attendance at each session and a good work ethic are requirements for success in this course.

During this course, students will engage in practice exercises and review to improve their SAT performance.
These sessions are equally divided between reviewing verbal and math skills. Students will take two SATs that
are scored and analyzed at the first and last sessions. An ACT test is also taken in the first week and analyzed.
These analyses will pinpoint the individual weakness(es) and will enable the student to focus intently on needed
areas of improvement.

Instruction will also emphasize improving skills already taught in the classroom environment. The verbal sessions
will concentrate on skills relating to grammar and structure, sentence completion, vocabulary, and reading
comprehension. Skills necessary for effective essay writing will also be covered. The math sessions will review
topics in algebra and geometry covered on the SAT; there will be extensive practice with the format of the test.
Practice is also given in gridding and in free response answers in math, and emphasis is placed on calculator
usage.

In addition, one session will be led by our College Guidance Director, Ashley Pittman, with suggestions on how
students may best present themselves to colleges and how to choose the colleges that are right for them.

Writing for the SAT
July 14 – 18 • 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. • Rising Grades 10 -12 • $175/week

Instructor: Barbara Carter, CCES English Department Chair
This course is designed to strengthen writing skills pertaining to the demands of the new SAT. Students will
learn techniques to create stronger essays. These include developing effective topic sentences, constructing
paragraphs of appropriate length and strength, organizing paragraphs into effective essays, minimizing
grammatical and structural errors in timed writing, and providing good support for the ideas about which they are
writing. Students will practice how to effectively use the 25 minutes given to write the essay, while constructing
both expository and persuasive essay types.

READING & STUDY SKILLS

Sheffield Communications Two-Day Advanced Reading Course
July 21 – 22 (M,Tu) • 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. • Rising Grades 8 – Adult • $250/2 days

Instructor: Provided by Sheffield Communications
Advanced Reading focuses primarily on increasing reading speed and improving comprehension. Confidence in
reading skills is essential if students are to succeed in their secondary school work and meet the demands on
college academics. This course includes:

1. Understanding the reading process
2. Identifying and correcting basic reading faults
3. Building reading rate
4. Improving concentration
5. Varying reading rate to suit purpose and difficulty of material
6. Previewing, skimming, and scanning
7. Studying and reviewing techniques

The course is designed for average and above-average readers who want to improve their skills. Students build
from their present reading ability and progress at their own pace. Students learn their new reading skills with the
aid of reading rate accelerators, eye exercises, and comprehension tests. The course is not competitive; students
are encouraged to progress at their own pace. Our method emphasizes doing instead of passive observation. A
review is conducted 30 – 90 days after the course. Students are retested and the principles of the program are
reiterated.

Sheffield Communications Three-Day Advanced Reading & Effective Study Techniques Course
July 21 – 23(M,Tu,W) • 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. • Rising Grades 8 – Adult • $350/3 days

Instructor: Provided by Sheffield Communications
This program offers a third day in addition to the Advanced Reading course described above, which is a
prerequisite. The Effective Study Techniques part of the course, in no way remedial, teaches students how to
approach their studies more confidently and efficiently. In Effective Study Techniques, students build on skills
learned in the reading program. They focus on techniques for note-taking and review, planning study time,
memory and retention, and test-taking. Effective Study Techniques is not just for strugglers; often the most
successful students waste their efforts because they do not spend their study time in the most productive way.
