Math CAMMP Full
June 28 – July 2 • 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. • Rising 1 – 6 • $300
Instructors: Dr. Cece Toole, Assistant Professor, USC Upstate School of Education
Ms. Cara Musumeci, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

CAMMP’s philosophy is to enhance your child’s genuine understanding of mathematics and its connections to thinking, reasoning and real-world problem-solving. Individual attention is given to each CAMMPer by specially trained master-level teachers. Students are typically placed according to their rising grade level. However, for those doing more advanced mathematics or in need of remediation, appropriate math placements are made. Changes in placements will occur after the first day of camp, giving the teachers an opportunity to work with each child and assess the appropriate placement. More detailed information is available on our website, www.cces.org.

Christ Church Episcopal School is proud to host the nationally acclaimed Math CAMMP (Comprehensively Applied Manipulative Mathematics Program) developed by UNCC professors Dr. Michael Green and Dr. Jack Piel. Summer Math CAMMP emphasizes three basic principles: having fun, learning through hands-on manipulatives, and problem-solving. The entire curriculum reflects these principles as students develop a head start for the upcoming school year. Whether your child is a math whiz or needs review, the CAMMP experience produces logical understanding and helps children find the fun in mathematics.

Rising first-graders:
• recalling basic addition and subtraction facts
• generating strategies to add and subtract without re-grouping
• understanding how patterns relate to addition and subtraction

Rising second-graders:
• understanding equal groupings as repeated addition & sharing equally as repeated subtraction
• generating strategies to add and subtract two-digit numerals with regrouping
• generating strategies to round numbers to the nearest ten

Rising third-graders:
• applying an algorithm to add and subtract whole numbers fluently
• generating strategies to multiply one single-digit whole-number factor and one double-digit whole-number factor
• using symbols to represent an unknown quantity in a simple addition, subtraction, or multiplication equation

Rising fourth-graders:
• applying an algorithm to multiply whole numbers fluently
• generating strategies to divide whole numbers by single-digit divisors

Rising fifth-graders:
• understanding the concept of prime and composite numbers
• generating strategies to find the greatest common factor and the least common multiple of two whole numbers
• applying an algorithm to add and subtract fractions
• generating strategies to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators

Rising sixth-graders:
• understanding the concepts of percentages and integers
• comparing rational numbers and percentages
• applying order of operations
• using inverse operations to solve one-step equations
• representing location of points in all four quadrants

Students enrolled in Math CAMMP will also be involved in Robotics. CAMMPers will use LEGO Mindstorms to simulate real-life robotics and robotic systems. Materials will be available from simple constructions to more complex constructions using programming software. Matthew Green is the Robotics instructor and brings experience and knowledge from the Robotics program at Stanford University. Robotics groups will be based on rising grade level but changes in groups can be made based on experience using these materials.

Basic Robotics (Grades 1 – 3)
CAMMPers learn the basics of simple, repetitive-motion machines. Each CAMMPer will build and operate both manually and battery-powered machines for land and water.

Advanced Robotics (Grades 4 – 6)
CAMMPers build complex machines that operate on batteries, electricity, and solar power. More advanced students design computer programs to control the timing, sequencing, and motions of these complex machines.
