The Cavalier Players are putting the finishing touches on their scenes and on such songs as “Some Things Are Meant to Be” and “Astonishing” in their production of Little Women (The Musical), and excitement is building as they prepare for their performances on Feb. 7, 8, 9, and 10.

We think that some things, like coming to see this astonishing musical with your entire family, are just meant to be.

“Little Women” (The Musical) follows the traditional plot outlined in the original novel by Louisa May Alcott set in the midst of The War Between the States. It is a great American classic and a monumental tribute to the recognition of women as vital, intelligent, and ambitious members of society, bringing us a significant step forward towards the more equitable world of the twentieth century, a step which included the painful conflict of the American Civil War and its difficult resolution.

According to director Molly Aiken, “This musical has glorious melodies, with every number designed for pulling our heartstrings. The show has bittersweet moments too, especially centering on dear Beth’s tragic illness. Its ending, though, is victorious as Jo finds the essence of her life and realizes that writing about what she knows and loves most—her family—will be her greatest contribution as a writer, giving them all a kind of immortality.”

The cast includes CCES stage veterans Elizabeth Beeson (Maria in The Sound of Music) as Jo, Katie Atkinson (Mother Abbess, TSOM) as the oldest sister Meg, Jen Kotrady (Sister Margaretta, TSOM) as the ill-fated Beth, and Caitlin Evins (Louisa, TSOM) as the “baby” sister Amy. The beloved Marmee, the girls’ mother, is played by newcomer and senior Cortney McEniry, complemented by senior Lake Dailey (Sister Berthe, TSOM) as the formidable matron of the family, Aunt March.

Other roles include Connor McEvoy as Laurie, Cody Cobb as Professor Bhaer, John Flanagan as Mr. Brooke, and Dexter Rogers as Laurie’s grandfather, Mr. Laurence. The supporting cast also includes Jonathan Pierce, Jacquelyn Pusker, Paige Schumaker, Chelsea Lawdahl, Smedes Scovil, George Washburn, McAdams Christopher, Elizabeth Blake, Sheldon Clark, and Milkie Ha N. Vu. A crew of about twelve CCES students will also join in the technical aspects of the show behind the scenes.

The show enlists a lot of parent support, including Kathy Atkinson and Ann Cobb as parent coordinators and costumers and Carl Sykes, our eminent man-about-school, as our set builder—big jobs!! The professional orchestra will include the full pit—five strings, two winds, three brass, piano, and percussion—a perfect sonority for the soaring, rich sounds of this exciting score.

“The show is a must for history and literature buffs,” said Mrs. Aiken. “It is a worthy attempt at making a musical from a deep and moving story that is, by its nature, an intimate setting. Its subject is fitting for all ages but will be most enjoyed by students 12 and older and adults.”

Come and enjoy a brilliant cast and an outstanding theatrical vehicle as CCES proudly presents “Little Women.”

Performances will be held in the CCES auditorium on February 7th at 7 p.m.; February 8th and 9th at 8 p.m., and February 10th at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are priced at $20 for adults and $12 for students.
