With her uncompromising reputation for promoting the academic excellence of our students, it was fitting to have former College Guidance Director and English teacher Jackie Suber as the guest speaker for the annual Cum Laude Assembly in the Upper School.

Mrs. Suber begged to differ with Asheville native son Thomas Wolf, who wrote You Can't Go Home Again. "We can--and you will--come back to this home at CCES," she told the students.

Cum Laude Inductees
Math teacher and Cum Laude Society advisor Charlie McGee announced the induction of four seniors into the Cum Laude Society: Bailey Marie Ezell, Katherine Anne Latham, Mary Gorman McArthur, and Cortney Elizabeth McEniry.

"The major purpose of the Cum Laude Society is to recognize scholastic achievement in our school while simultaneously striving to encourage qualities of excellence, justice, and honor," he said.

Members of the current senior class who were inducted into Cum Laude last spring were also recognized: Emily Irene Bridges, John Alexander Chase Carpenter, Julia Kinigadner, James Casper Mills IV, Trey Carlton Mullikin, Hunter McClellan Smith, and Dan McKeithan Thomason, Jr.

National Merit Scholars & Palmetto Fellows
College Guidance Director Ashley Pittman announced that this year, we not only have four National Merit Finalists, but that two of them were also named National Merit Scholars and will each receive a $2,500 scholarship. Our 2008 National Merit Scholars are Emily Bridges and Chase Carpenter; only 700 students nationally are named National Merit Scholars. Caitlin Evins and Hunter Smith were named National Merit Finalists by the College Board.

Mrs. Pittman also recognized the following qualifying Palmetto Fellows: Emily Bridges, Chase Carpenter, Bailey Ezell, Claire Johnson, Lauren Mullen, Trey Mulliken, Hunter Smith, and McKee Thomason. The Palmetto Fellows Scholarship is the highest honor given by the State of South Carolina to students who attend college in state.
