It was a variation on the old "surprise party" scenario:
senior Michael Brearley was called to the office and greeted by
a rather stern-looking Ashley Pittman, who led him brusquely into
her office.
For a second or two Brearley appeared disoriented to find his entire
family huddled in Mrs. Pittman's office--until Furman University
Assistant Director of Admissions Jeny Kerscher stepped forward to
congratulate him on being awarded the Hollingsworth Scholarship.

The Brearleys share in congratulating Michael
on his award. His mother, Tammy, teaches third
grade at CCES.
Brearley is an IB Diploma candidate and National Merit Commended
Scholar. A three-sport CCES athlete, he was named a Wendy's High
School Heisman Nominee this year. He has received MVP awards on
both the CCES varsity soccer and basketball teams, and has been
a member of the school's state championship soccer team throughout
his high school career. In varsity cross country he was named Region
Runner of the Year and All-State. He is active in the school's Volunteer
Club, Book Club, Vestry, Spanish Club, and Youth in Government,
to name a few of his many extra-curricular commitments, and he has
also been involved in the community at the Triune Methodist Soup
Kitchen, the Pleasant Valley House Build, and Race for the Cure.
The Hollingsworth Scholarship, established to retain some of South
Carolina's brightest students in state for a college education,
is given annually to 20 top students. In the three years since the
award was established, one of the 20 scholarships has always been
given to a CCES student.

from
Furman University.
The Hollingsworth pays $25,000 towards tuition and fees, renewable
for three additional years with a Furman cumulative grade point
average of 3.0 or higher. Study abroad, a summer internship or research
experience, and participation in the Hollingsworth Seminar are additional
benefits designed to develop students' leadership potential.
Congratulations, Michael, on a well-deserved honor!
