About

Head of School Transition

Christ Church Episcopal School recently named David Padilla as the ninth Head of School, replacing current Head of School Dr. Leonard Kupersmith, who will retire at the end of the 2020 school year.

"I am certainly enthusiastic about the selection of David. I think he is ready and able to assume the headship of a school of this quality and complexity."

"I am eager to return to a school with a faith-based approach to educating the whole child and to preserving its identity as an Episcopal institution. Having attended Sewanee and worked at St. Albans in Washington, DC, I feel as though Episcopalians have gotten education “right.” While the intellectual, physical, and emotional growth of a student is central, the spiritual component cannot be ignored as we prepare students not simply for the demands of the university, but also for the larger ethical considerations of citizenry."

  • New Head of School Announcement

    Cary Weekes
    Dear CCES Community,

With great enthusiasm, I am very pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees unanimously voted to appoint David Padilla as the ninth Head of School for CCES beginning in July of 2020.

David’s appointment marks the end of a seven-month, international search process during which the Search Committee met several exceptional candidates. In a highly competitive field, David’s passion for independent school education, energy for the pursuit of excellence, and curiosity for learning made him the clear choice. Throughout the process the search team pursued candidates who embodied the values that are at the core of CCES:  Character, Community, Excellence, and Service.  We also sought candidates who possessed attributes recommended by our community and characteristics that make CCES special: educating the whole child through our Episcopal Identity, a passion for athletics and the arts, the commitment to creating an inclusive community, nurturing a committed and caring faculty, and academic excellence.

  • Announcement of Retirement

    Leonard Kupersmith & Cary Weekes
    Dear CCES Community:

I want to share my gratitude for the privilege of serving as the eighth headmaster of Christ Church Episcopal School. At school and in the community, I have been blessed by friendships, collegiality, and collaboration. From my arrival on campus on a weekend in mid-August 2006 when Bill Preston, Doug Qualls' predecessor, greeted me warmly and gave me a tour, I have lived and worked among the kindest and most generous people I know.
