Major Gift Funds Resurfacing of Tennis Courts

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications

As the Lady Cavs launch another season of tennis, one special family recognized two beloved coaches, Sherry Adams and A.B. Stewart, by resurfacing the CCES tennis courts in their honor.

Resurfacing tennis courts is an expensive endeavor, and as any tennis aficionado knows, it must take place approximately every ten years to maintain optimum playability. Katherine and Dirk Pieper have been long-time supporters of CCES, and when it came time for the school to solicit funds for the resurfacing of the current courts, they immediately stepped up.

“Katherine and Dirk Pieper, have devoted hours to supporting our tennis program and the school as a whole,” said Dr. Leonard Kupersmith, Head of School.

CCES tennis is widely regarded as a dynasty, dominating the competition with 41 state championships over the course of three generations, nine of them under the 13-year tenure of Coach Sherry Adams. Coach A.B. Stewart has been with the program for eight years. The Pieper family has contributed to this success in an enormous way. Their daughters Anna '13 and Paula '18 played on three state championship teams. Dirk, Jr. ‘11 played on two state finalist teams as an eighth grader and as a freshman, before he opted for soccer in the spring. When she was not cheering for three state championship football teams or playing varsity lacrosse, their third eldest Meg ’16, loved rooting for her tennis siblings! However, it is not the victories that occupy their memories.

“Sherry and A.B. represent all the elements that CCES aspires to be,” said Dirk Pieper. “They taught our children character through teaching sportsmanship, they taught service through caring for their teammates and community, and they taught excellence— how to win state championships with the understanding that nothing worth having comes easy and how to win or lose with class.”

Coach Adams, in her typical enthusiastic and supportive way, said at the September 4th dedication, “Two words come to mind when I think of the Pieper family— passion and love.” She went on to speak of the commitment of the players as well as the families at CCES. Coach Stewart echoed those sentiments saying that CCES is “the best community to be a part of.”

The Pieper family’s passion for CCES is as extraordinary as the dedication and passion for coaching and teaching displayed by Coach Adams and Coach Stewart. These coaches have affected the lives of the young women they have embraced, and the life lessons they have conveyed will have a lasting impact.

We thank you, Lord, for our tennis courts, for their new surfaces,
for the Piepers, for A.B. Stewart, and for Sherry Adams.
May all who play and practice here, in the days and years to come,
have an abiding sense of your holy, joyful, and life-giving presence.
May we play hard, and play well. May we play like Cavaliers.
We ask your blessing, dear God, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
