    Language Arts
    Our Primer students experience reading and writing through quality literature. They are also given directed phonics instruction to help understand the relationship between sounds and letters. Creative writing is taught through activities that include drawing word and picture stories using developmental or invented spelling. Handwriting mechanics using the D’Nealian method are also introduced and practiced. Communication skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking are woven throughout the Primer curriculum.

    Mathematics
    The Math In Focus program is designed to introduce a wide range of mathematical concepts. During the school year, Primers work on patterning, classifying, sorting, graphing, estimating, measurement, addition, subtraction, number sense, problem solving, geometry, and money.

    Discovery (hands-on Science)
    The goal of Primer science is to get students involved in creative problem-solving through a variety of hands-on experiences. In Discovery class, students are encouraged to question, experiment, collect, and conclude. Some topics of study include: plants and insects, exploring the five senses, rocks, natural resources, and matter and light.

    History & Social Sciences
    Primer students start school with a great deal of experience interacting in the world. We want to build on that knowledge and help them explore new horizons. We focus on families, communities, and responsible citizenship, along with interactions in society and the environment.

    Spanish
    Beginning in Primer and throughout the Lower School, our students explore the Spanish language. Students sing, play games, and interact in bilingual lessons that emphasize
    speaking and listening. They also learn basic colors and numbers. Students learn about life in various Spanish communities, including their food, clothing, and cultural customs.
  • Electives

    Performing Arts: Music
    Our Primer students sing, play, move, improvise, and create in music class. They develop pitch awareness, learn patterns, and create a steady beat in ensemble. They also learn performance etiquette and how to be a good audience.

    Visual Arts
    Students are introduced to two-and three-dimensional media to express their ideas and interpret their world imaginatively and creatively. Art activities encourage experimentation, growth in skills, and awareness of design principles in art and their environment.

    Christian Education
    The program for Primers focuses on love, respect, honesty, tolerance, empathy, and forgiveness. The students also study about Creation, God’s laws, and Jesus’ miracles, all of which create a foundation to build upon during their thirteen years at CCES.

    Health
    Healthy habits are reinforced throughout our school. Students in Primer are taught the basic food groups, the importance of staying hydrated, as well as the difference between bullying and teasing. They also study landfills, recycling, and noise pollution.

    Library
    Students learn how books, magazines, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and atlases can be used to enhance and extend their knowledge of the content simultaneously taught in the classroom. By the end of Primer, students are able, with the help of marker cards, to select their own books from different areas of the library.

    Technology
    Our technology program correlates with the skills that are being developed in the classroom. It introduces and builds computer literacy skills that are utilized through the P-12 program. Primers also use Smart Boards, iPads, and are exposed to keyboarding.

    Physical Education
    At the Primer level, physical education begins the foundation of a positive attitude toward a healthy body and physical fitness. Primers participate in basic locomotive movement skills, spatial awareness activities, basic tumbling, cooperation skills, and basic rhythm activities.
