Spotlight On: Sabrina Wang, CCES Class of 2017

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Marketing and PR
For Sabrina Wang, CCES Class of 2017, the last three years have been a formative time in her life.  It has also been her first encounter with life in the United States.  Sabrina is so motivated to explore and so eager to face a challenge that she left her parents in China and came to live with her aunt and uncle in Greenville, SC in order to seek academic enrichment in the United States.

“It was really a different situation back in China. I followed a strict daily routine and stayed about 15 hours at school each day to study,” said Sabrina.  “I had no time to do the things I truly love and enjoy.  I lost my passion.  So I decided to come to a new environment to clear my mind and find my path.”  In essence, Sabrina feels liberated.  CCES has led her down a delightful path that will continue at one of the top undergraduate honors programs in the country, Schreyer Honors College (SHC) at Penn State University.  Penn State will offer Sabrina the benefits of a large public school, while the Schreyer Honor College will give her the opportunity to stay in a small group of people, which she admittedly prefers.  She also applied to Emory, University of Pittsburgh, North Carolina State, Purdue University, Cornell, Case Western, and the University of Rochester, among many others.  She will double major in Computing Statistics and Food Science— blending a passion for problem solving and a penchant for biology and chemistry.

It comes as no surprise that Sabrina has made High Honor Roll ever since she came to CCES as a sophomore.  Her College Counselor Linda Schulz notes, “Sabrina is an extremely independent student who takes ownership of her learning and is meticulous in organizing her academic responsibilities.”  Her teachers speak of her as “a wonderful student” who “has a great work ethic” and “is one of the most diligent and motivated students.”  In the wider context of her CCES education, Sabrina has been on the Math Team for three years (current president), assists in coaching Middle School Math Counts, is a member of the Chinese Club (current president), Art Club, Cavalier Blues, and participated in the Upper School musical two years in a row.  She placed 4th in the division and 10th overall in the Clemson Calculus Challenge this year.

The international flavor of CCES and a spiritual and educational philosophy that celebrates differences, has helped Sabrina transition beautifully.  However, she does get homesick she says, especially when she has nothing to do and gets bored of American food!  Characteristically mature and self-aware, she is usually able to cheer herself up and move forward with a positive attitude.

“A passionate, intelligent, curious, and engaged young woman, Sabrina has made her mark on CCES and in the Greenville community,” Linda Schulz says.  “I commend her for having the maturity and fortitude to choose and direct her own pathway in life at such a young age.  She knows what is important to her and she is determined to reach her goals.”  We commend Sabrina on finding a better path on her academic journey.  CCES has been so fortunate to have her among our study body.

JUST FOR FUN!

Name one thing you will miss about CCES? Getting "scared" by Mr. McGee when his ruler hits the desk in front of me.
Name something this world could use a lot more of? Forgiveness, food for medicinal use, and solar power.
What is your dream pet? A golden retriever!
Three things you love about the United States? Challenging teachers, good air with no pollution, and the fruits are awesome!
Three things you miss about China? My parents, the food, and speaking Chinese.
