Hippos Make Everything Better

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Marketing & PR
This story has been previously published, but it is simply too good not to share again!

It started with a sewing camp.

CCES Middle School students Pressley Ann Childs, CCES Class of 2023 and Brooke Childs, CCES Class of 2024, like most Middle School students, were looking for a way to make money. After taking a sewing camp, sewing became a hobby of theirs. During camp, they made a stuffed hippo. Then, they had the idea to take the leap from “hobby” to starting an actual business. “We thought they were really cute and we decided other kids would like them as much as we did,” said Pressley Ann, and they were right!

Like most entrepreneurs, the girls faced some hurdles. “We had to buy all the materials to make the hippos and we recorded our profits and expenses,” said Brooke. The girls have both had some experience in learning how to start a business, through the Third Grade Kids in Business unit they did in Fourth Grade. “Also, sometimes the sewing machine would not work or we might have to rip out a seam and start over.” They overcame their hurdles by not getting upset and by working together.

UPDATE: The girls recently donated 80 hippos to the March of Dimes and raised $3,500. Anyone who wants a hippo donates money, receives a hippo, and can then donate it back to the NICU at Greenville Hospital System. After the babies are approved to go home, they get a hippo to take with them!

Both girls were born premature, so this is a cause near and dear to everyone’s heart. Pressley Ann says, “Our hero is our mom because she always helps us get through the tough times when we feel like quitting.” Their advice to other kids who want to start their own business, “Make sure you have the time and passion for what you want to do.”
