Senior Myka Young Named Epiphany Scholar at Upper School Chapel

by Eli Connaughton, Director of Development Communications
This year’s Upper School Epiphany Chapel was held a week later than usual due to a beautiful snowfall. Therefore, CCES had a doubly joyous celebration on January 24. We welcomed the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina, The Right Reverend W. Andrew Waldo, and celebrated our new Epiphany Scholar, Myka Young.

Established in 1991 to honor a student who exemplifies commitment to Christian values through worship, sensitivity, and outreach to others, this award is advanced by the Rector of Christ Church Episcopal. The Reverend Dr. Harrison McLeod was here to present the award.

Before the presentation, John Zebell, Upper School Wellness and Student Support Coordinator, shared his own observations of Myka as not only a student but a leader who inspires others with her actions. Addressing Myka directly, he said, “You use your gifts to share the light of Christ with the world, the community, your church, your school, and your friends...You have offered so much to our community and we are grateful to you.”

He went on to laud her commitment to serving others, a trait he witnessed first-hand on a short-term mission trip to South Africa. “During our trip you led and inspired others to give their all, to forget about themselves, and to be fully present with those we had traveled across the ocean to serve.”

In relaying several quotes from Myka’s teachers and her college counselor, just a few of the words and phrases used to describe her were: “a person of integrity and good will,” “soulful,” “quietly adventurous,” and possessing “true humility which is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less and others more.”

Friend, fellow choir member, and student presenter, Halie Finotti ’18, spoke of Myka’s faith and how profoundly it had affected and shaped her own journey. She concluded by saying, “I cannot think of anyone who deserves this award more than Myka.”
