Spotlight On: Martha Quattlebaum, CCES Class of 2018

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Marketing & PR
What is particularly inspiring about Martha Quattlebaum is, well, just about everything.  In addition to her highly contagious positive outlook and radiant energy, she is a high-achiever, inspiring others to embrace an unconventional way of thinking.  She rises, and overcomes, challenges in her life, inspiring others, particularly those who are dyslexic like her or struggle with a learning disability. She relentlessly seeks new experiences, combining her adventurousness and curiosity with persistence and a sense that it is not all about her— something that will no doubt serve her well as a Psychology Major.

Martha always knew she wanted to attend a small, private, liberal arts school so she applied to Lynn University, Presbyterian College, Lander University, and hesitantly, Converse College.  The all-women’s school, Converse College, will be her home this fall.  At the encouragement of her college counselor Linda Schulz and her tennis coach, a Converse alumna, Martha went on a campus visit, where she was able to sit in on a class and even spend the night with a Valkyrie tennis player.  Martha was sold, and was later awarded a scholarship to play Division II tennis for the Valkyries (her signing takes place on April 11th).

Martha first came to CCES as a Primer, then left to attend Camperdown Academy, returning to CCES for 5th – 12th grade. “CCES has helped me a lot throughout my years,” she notes.  She readily admits there are times she has struggled academically, and credits her teachers as being a “tremendous help.”  “They are here to help and encourage you. That’s what this school is for and the thing I am most in love with (at CCES). The help here is insane.”

Generally speaking, students are typically talented in either athletics or arts.  Martha is talented in both. Six years of playing junior varsity and varsity tennis for CCES and an athletic scholarship demonstrate her athletic prowess, but her love for music, drama, and performance endures.  Martha is involved in Improv Club, Art Club, is a member of the Bluebelles, plays the ukulele and guitar, is learning the banjo, and has acted in school musicals since the 5th grade.  Martha fondly recalls her roles in The King and I , Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Little Mermaid, Fiddler on the Roof, Greece, Kiss Me, Kate, Once Upon A Mattress, and Oklahoma.  She then tells me, “I never care what part I get, I just love being on stage and the atmosphere.”  Characteristically, Martha. Two years ago she was courageous enough to try out for the popular series “The Voice” in Atlanta, but she was not chosen for the show.  In true Martha fashion, she did not let her disappointment stop her and moved on to other creative pursuits! Recently, Martha was awarded the 2017 Chris Ferrell Award, which is given in memory of a previous CCES student who was passionate for art and life.

The composition of Martha Quattlebaum is categorically sugar, spice, and everything nice.  Her College Counselor, Linda Schulz says, “Deeply interested in other people’s lives, loving, creative and vibrant, Martha will be a treasured addition to her college community.  Her unflagging work ethic will ensure her academic success, and her beautiful demeanor and kind heart will endear her to all.”
