Spotlight On: John “Jack” Nichols, CCES Class of 2018
Duke has a high reputation and they only select students that will best represent the university, less than 9%, to be exact. A snapshot of their type of student is professional in his/her behaviors, studious, energetic, and optimistic about life. That student will have a heart for others’ well-being, and will strive to give his/her best contributions to society. Those are just some of the reasons that Duke University chose Jack Nichols. Though he considered other options including Furman University, The University of Virginia, Tulane University, and Washington and Lee University, Jack had his own reasons for choosing Duke.
A lifelong fan of the Blue Devils’ athletic programs, Jack discovered early on why fans travel from across the country simply to catch a game at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Nichols family ties to Duke are strong, Jack’s dad, Charles also graduated from the storied university. Athletics aside, Jack states, “I also believe their academic rigor matches what I need to succeed later in life.” Unsure of his major, he is intent on minoring in Spanish.
Jack joined CCES in the first grade and describes his experience at CCES as being unequivocally prolific. He has taken advantage of the many opportunities he’s had to develop as a student, (he has taken the most demanding curriculum available at CCES and will graduate with a total of 10 Advanced Placement courses this spring), and has enthusiastically ventured into new subjects and activities (he writes for the CCES Student News and is especially interested in the Spanish language, so much so that he is intent on minoring in it). A soccer player nearly all his life, Jack is currently the Cavaliers starting goalkeeper. Proving that it is possible to not only juggle both sports and academics, but excel at both, Jack serves as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Academic Team this year, is a member of the Spanish Honor Society, boasts both Honor Roll and High Honor Roll achievements throughout high-school, and is a distinguished AP Scholar with Honor. Likewise challenging the parable of sports versus arts, Jack keeps himself busy playing the trumpet in the CCES Band, which he has played since the 6th grade.
His College Counselor, Bartley Sides says, “If you ask Jack to describe himself, he truly thinks he’s just a regular high school student and he’d say: smart, funny, and athletic. However, I know how remarkable he is and would describe him as humble, resilient, and compassionate.” Jack will pursue a purposeful and rewarding path in college and beyond, and he will not be afraid to eclipse his boundaries to find it.
JUST FOR FUN!
I understand you are somewhat of a foodie. What is your favorite Greenville restaurant and/or dish? I don't really have a favorite place, but if I had to choose it would be Mac's Speed Shop because it balances really good bar food with a fun environment.
What is your favorite professional sport to watch? Soccer.
If you knew you could not fail, what would you do? Start a business, since, well, it won't fail!
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Zip-lined over alligators, despite my fear of heights.
If you could travel back in time and visit your younger self, what grade would you go back to and why? Probably 3rd grade, we had some wild times in Mrs. Wrenn's class. Let's just say I was a handful! (We like to say he was academically curious.😊 )
