Spring Athletic Commitment Day

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Marketing & PR
Christ Church Episcopal School has six athletes whose success we celebrated on Wednesday, April 12th, during a committment ceremony with school officials, family, and friends bringing the total number of CCES student-athletes playing Division I, II, and III athletics this fall to 14—14% of the Class of 2018 and a new CCES record!

The students who committed are as follows:

Will Bethel - Soccer at Center College
Mary Hunter Hyche - Tennis at Furman University
Ellis Millwood - Football at Washington & Lee University
Paula Pieper - Basketball at Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Martha Quattlebaum - Tennis at Converse College
Ben Wetenhall - Baseball at College of Charleston

Athletic Director Molly Miller thanked coaches and administration, families, and friends for their support of the athletes and had the following commentary on each individual:

"Will Bethel is a 13 year veteran of Christ Church Episcopal School.  Will’s soccer coach notes that he shows great leadership on and off the field.  He is a player of strong character and sets a great example for younger players.  All of Will’s teachers agree, he is kind, always being the first to offer to help and never leaves without a 'thank you'.  Will works hard and is dedicated to giving his best effort. Dr. Wright sums it up best, and I quote, 'Will embodies the intangible qualities that I find most valuable: kindness, courtesy, enthusiasm, and curiosity'.  I am thrilled to announce that Will will continue his soccer career at Centre College.

Mary Hunter Hyche joined CCES in the 9th grade.  She has been actively involved in the yearbook staff since the 10th grade and this year, serves as a yearbook editor along with two other seniors.  Mary Hunter is described by her teachers as grounded, steady, and conscientious. She pushes herself to improve academically and has high expectations for herself in the classroom. The same can be said for her work on the court. Mary Hunter is driven to play top level tennis. In 2014, she was named Class A Player of the year and All-State. Mary Hunter trains with Tami and Kelly Jones as well as with Warren Bray and spends many weekend traveling to tournaments throughout South Carolina.  We are thrilled to announce that Mary Hunter will continue her tennis career at Furman University.

Ellis Millwood is a 13 year vet of Christ Church.  In addition to him participating on the football team,  Ellis was a member of the track team for two years and has served as a student ambassador as well as a Student Council Representative.  Ellis is described by his teachers as a natural leader - on the field, in the classroom, and amongst the student body. He is confident and goal oriented, honest and trustworthy.  Coach Frost notes his strong desire to make his team great by the way he handles himself. He works tirelessly in the weight room in season and during the off season. We are thrilled to announce that Ellis with continue his football career this fall at Washington and Lee.

Paula Pieper is a 13 year vet at Christ Church.  In addition to basketball, Paula is a member of the Varsity tennis team and the Varsity soccer team, winning multiple state titles.  Paula serves as Student Body President and has been a member of our Student Council since her freshman year. Her teachers describe her as fun, creative, enthusiastic, and an outstanding young scholar.  Paula sets high expectations and cannot be deterred from reaching her goals. Coach Greco describes her as a player with pure athletic talent and a clutch mentality. Coach Vicks regrets not being able to attend today’s recognition but states that she remembers the first time Paula stepped on the court in her varsity uniform.  She was determined to become the very best that she could be. Paula’s countless hours in the gym when no one was watching shows her dedication and team leadership. We are thrilled to announce that Paula will continue her basketball career at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Martha Quattlebaum first came to Christ Church in Primer.  In addition to Varsity Tennis, Martha is active in our week Chapel services and has also participated in musicals and the choir since the 5th grade.  Martha is described by her teachers as kind, considerate, persistent, and passionate. She is open and excited about learning, a risk taker, loving, and vibrant.   Coach Adams sees the same characteristics in Martha on the court. 'Martha is always a team player and gives 100% in each match. Martha served as a captain this year.  She is always positive and always an encourager to others.' We are thrilled to announce that Martha will continue her tennis career this fall at Converse College.

Ben Wetenhall is 13 year vet of Christ Church.  He has been a member of the Varsity baseball team since the 8th grade.  Ben’s teachers describe him as one who cares deeply for those around him.  He is a dedicated student and a joy to teach. Ben has been active in the baseball team’s mission work in the Dominican Republic.  Coach Barwick notes that he has a passion for service and his servants heart will enable him to do great work in baseball and in life.  Ben was named to the all-region team in 9, 10, and 11th grade and Diamond Prospects All-State team last year. We are thrilled to announce that Ben will continue his baseball career at the College of Charleston.

Congratulations to the six of you.  We are proud of your successes in the classroom and in athletics.  Thank you for your contributions to our school and for being ambassadors to our athletic program.  Enjoy this moment, finish the year strong - You are almost there!  As you step on the field or courts next year with new mascots and new team colors, remember your roots, remember those that were a part of your journey, and remember that you are forever Cavaliers."
