Spotlight On: Jordan Haywood, CCES Class of 2018

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Marketing & PR
Jordan Haywood is in the midst of her final Track & Field season at the high school level.  As a track athlete she has showed promise from a very young age, competing at the Varsity level as just a seventh grader.  Jordan is one of the most highly recruited athletes in the CCES Class of 2018— she embodies the stellar qualities of a true winner, and competes with faith at her side.

Jordan will continue her Track & Field career this fall at Elon University, a liberal arts university with a beautifully historic campus in Elon, North Carolina.  Although competing at such a high level was always on her radar, at one time she wondered if it could be a real possibility.  Her mom urged her to be patient, and her patience paid off. “The calls came pouring in all at once,” she exclaimed! Coaches from High Point University, East Tennessee State University, The University of North Carolina Charlotte, East Carolina University, Appalachian State University, Davidson College, Georgia Tech, and many more contacted Jordan in the recruiting process.  Aside from having a great atmosphere, beautiful campus, welcoming students, and a team that “felt like a family”, Elon is one of the nation’s great communications schools. Communications being her intended major, it was a no brainer when Jordan decided to couple her athletic career with a degree from Elon.

Jordan arrived at CCES in the ninth grade.  For most students, transferring to a new school as a freshman can be ridden with loneliness and awkward situations.  Jordan admits it was a change coming from the public school system to CCES, but in a good way. “People were so welcoming to me and talkative, not at all clique-ish,” she says.  “It’s been a really great experience.” What has guided Jordan’s journey off the track has a lot to do with her success on it. Academically, Jordan’s teachers describe her as “engaged, self-aware, focused, and motivated,” and they appreciate her “thoughtful questions and helpful insights.”  Jordan, in turn, is grateful for her teachers, their desire to help her succeed, and their commitment to helping her achieve her goals. When I asked her about her favorite instructors, she rattled off, well... quite possibly all of them! “People here are focused on you and want you to do well,” she says.

In addition to Track & Field, Jordan is a valued member of the Varsity Volleyball team, a former member of the Basketball team, a Bible study leader, and a member of the dance team and choir at her church.  Her sophomore year, she won the State Championship in the 100M Hurdles, the following year she clinched the title in the 100M hurdles, 100M and 200M dash. She was also the Region MVP for girls and MVP Athlete of the Year for Track.  On top of that, she is a founding member of the CCES Chill Club, a religious organization that meets weekly before school. Jordan is heavily involved in service to her community with both CCES and her church.

Her College Counselor, Bartley Sides says, “Jordan is an incredibly consistent student who is willing to put in the hard work to achieve her academic goals.  She will put as much effort into her work in the classroom as she does on the track and field team.” Perhaps just as importantly, “Jordan may be one of nicest, kindest, supportive seniors in our class this year.”

JUST FOR FUN!

What is your favorite community organization?  I love going to Triune Mercy Center.  The people there touch my heart, it makes my morning.
Do you have any superstitions?  Before I run a race, I have to wear the exact same things; same undergarments, same socks, and this necklace. (She clutches her silver chain with a cross around her neck.) It makes me feel like I have God with me.
Which is better – a novel or a movie?  Movie, the last movie I saw was “A Quiet Place”.
Where in the world would you like to get lost?  Disney World, I love it there so much!
What has been your favorite class at CCES?  Mr. Halverson’s Theater I and Film Appreciation class because Mr. Halverson is really cool to talk to, and if you’re having a bad day, he can turn it right around.
