Ninth Grade Biology Students Create Powerful Public Service Announcements

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Marketing & PR
When Upper School Biology teacher Paulette Unger asked me to speak to her students about Public Service Announcements, I was thrilled. PSAs are some of the most creative types of commercials on television, and among my favorite genre of ads. They can dramatize a story or narrate a story; they can be flashy or simple, use humor or scare tactics— often times resulting in the most memorable ads on some of the lowest budgets.

Mrs. Unger was working on a new lesson idea for ninth grade biology students, in an attempt to reinforce how body systems are connected.  Body systems work together to carry out important tasks, and when one is not working properly it can affect another.  The main focus for the students was finding connections in body systems to possible increased risk in heart disease.

Students would design an awareness campaign, in essence, a PSA— a short video aimed to persuade the audience that their body system's connection to heart health is most important.

I thoroughly enjoyed speaking to the students about the elements that go into designing a good PSA campaign.  Through this assignment, students were able to actively participate in a project allowing them to become stewards of and advocates for heart-healthy choices.  Who knows, they may use this skill and insight to one-day shine a new, relevant, and vital light on an important social issue.
