2018 Convocation

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Marketing & PR
All 1099 CCES students, 175 of them new to the school, filled the seats of McCall Field House this August 27th for Convocation. The ceremony marked the beginning of the 2018-19 school year and more importantly, the entrance into the life and traditions of the Christ Church Episcopal School community. It commenced with an Opening Prayer by Cutler Fowler, CCES Class of 2023, followed by The Star-Spangled Banner sung by the Blue Belles, and The Pledge of Allegiance proudly led by Sharon Sim ‘30 and Auggie Springhart '30. Headmaster Dr. Leonard Kupersmith noted in his opening remarks, “The Lord has granted us this day to celebrate the beauty of our community. Today you gather in a school where you can grow in mind, heart, body, and soul. We inherit a school about which we should rejoice and be glad. Each of us also inherits the duty to protect, preserve, and promote it.”

Emily Bridges, CCES Class of 2008 spoke next welcoming new students to the “Cavalier family”. “CCES is a special place,” she said. “Each school year is an opportunity to learn… and to make memories that you’ll carry with you, even as an alumni.” Mrs. Cary Weekes, in her first year as the Board of Trustees Chair, reflected on the last time she stood on stage in front of the CCES student body, faculty, staff and parents was, way back in the 1980’s as a Primer in the old performing arts building on the school’s 25th Anniversary celebration. “And next year we will mark 60 years,” she exclaimed! “I am constantly amazed at how far the school has come! 34 years ago, CCES was a really great school, but what CCES offers today is exceptional. I am in awe every time I come onto this campus of the continuous improvements, not just in the facilities, but in the level of instruction, the caliber of the students, and the successes in extracurriculars.”

Hailey Sanders, President of the Upper School Student Council, reflected on the trip of a lifetime she took this past summer with her dad, Dr. John Sanders. The two of them reached the top of Mount Kilimanjaro after almost a week of hiking for 5 to 8 hours each day! “I am reminded of three takeaways from my time spent on the mountain,” Hailey said. “Number one: always aim to live in the moment while maintaining a sense of excitement for the future. Number two: never settle for less than you know you can do. And finally, number three: always look to reach new heights.”
