Project Audio: Student Podcasting

There is a new addition to the Upper School library, the Cavalier Recording Studio! This brand-new podcasting room came about thanks to Upper School Media Specialist John Byrnes, who applied and was awarded a Daniel-Mickel Foundation education grant last year.
 
The Daniel-Mickel Foundation, located in Greenville, SC, evolved from the philanthropy of its founders, Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Daniel. Established in 1948 by the Daniels as The Daniel Foundation, it allowed the Daniels to contribute to local hospitals, churches, and college students in need of financial aid. As profits from the Daniels' construction business grew, so too did the foundation's ability to make significant contributions to Greenville's and the Upstate's landscape. The foundation's goal has always been to enhance the quality of life for all people in its community, and it focuses its funding on education, arts and culture, health and human services, and the environment. Over the years, The Daniel-Mickel Foundation has made significant contributions to organizations in and around Greenville, SC.
 
Through the Cavalier Recording Studio, Mr. Byrnes is challenging students and teachers to think about and encourage work with sounds— through interviews, narration, and recorded sounds from the world around them. The Cavalier Recording Studio is furnished with acoustics, recording and audio equipment, and editing software to boot.
 
“Audio has a primal connection to our use of language as humans,” stated Mr. Byrnes. “My hope is that a recording studio— with digital capacity, rather than physical tapes or other media— will be able to reclaim the idea that the spoken language is how and where we as humans start, rather than the written word that we often end up defaulting to in school settings. I hope that we can record, publish, and celebrate the spoken word, which is too often ephemeral and fleeting even in our connected world.”
 
Mr. Jacobbsen’s Upper School English classes are slated to record a class podcast this semester, and there is early interest in Mrs. Hendrickson’s and Mrs. Burns’ Middle School classes recording narrative history projects. Mrs. Kimmell hopes to add in some audio components to her AP Art students’ displays and projects.
 
As more companies, schools, and individuals are entering the podcasting scene, the potential of the Cavalier Recording Studio is enormous. We cannot wait to see what amazing things stem from this new initiative.
