CCES Alumni Celebrate at the 2018-19 Sports Hall of Fame Alumni VIP Dinner

by Eli Jordan, Graphic Design and Publications Manager

On January 18, 2019, prior to the Homegoing basketball game against Greenville Tech Charter, CCES alumni, family, and friends gathered to present several alumni awards and to welcome our newest inductee into the CCES Sports Hall of Fame.

After a blessing by LS Chaplain Valerie Riddle, and a warm welcome by CCES Director of Alumni Relations, Bibby Sierra ’83, the program was underway. Andy Waters ‘04, who currently serves as President of the Alumni Association, presented the alumni awards.

The Classes of 1987 and 1977 Receive The Cheves Achievement Awards

These awards were established by Kay and Lang Cheves in honor of their three children – Langdon ’89 and a current parent here at CCES, and their two daughters, Kathryn ’90 and Caroline ‘95, who are both past CCES Sports Hall of Fame inductees. The Cheves Awards recognize those alumni classes with the highest total dollars given and the highest participation in The Cavalier Fund (annual giving).

This year, alumni giving contributed over $154,918 to help The Cavalier Fund raise $802,847 overall, exceeding the $800,000 goal. The Class of 1977 received the award for the highest dollars raised, and the Class of 1987 received the award for highest participation.

Helen Wallace ’76 Receives the Mary B. Roper Distinguished Teacher Award

Andy then presented retired MS science teacher, CCES alumna, and 2012 Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Helen Wallace, with the Mary B. Roper Distinguished Teacher award, which honors a current or former faculty member who has demonstrated genuine interest and involvement in our alumni and alumni endeavors.

Described as being “full of energy and a willingness to take on whatever job was needed,” Helen Wallace taught science for 23 years at CCES. She also served as a student advisor in the Middle School, and ultimately became the Middle School Curriculum Coordinator. In 2003, she was awarded the Daniel Foundation Master Teacher Award. In addition, she was a dedicated coach in girls volleyball, girls varsity basketball, and boys JV tennis.

After retirement, Helen remained part of the school, serving on the Alumni Association Board for six years, attending alumni events, and serving as co-chair for the Golden Cavaliers.

Andrew McDonald ‘84 Receives The Marguerite Ramage Wyche Alumni Service Award

The Marguerite Ramage Wyche Alumni Service Award which honors alumni who have displayed extraordinary dedication and loyalty to CCES, was presented to Andrew McDonald. Andrew served as the Alumni Association president in 2017-18 and he and his wife, Laura, served as chairs of The Cavalier Fund for two years before that. They have three children at CCES – Martha who is in the seventh grade, Mary in fourth, and John who is a second grader. He always has been and continues to be an enthusiastic and dedicated member of our CCES community.
We congratulate all of our Alumni Award recipients and are grateful for their unwavering support of the school.

Chandler Catanzaro, Class of 2009, is Inducted into the CCES Sports Hall of Fame

The evening culminated with CCES Headmaster, Leonard Kupersmith, inducting Chandler Catanzaro into the CCES Sports Hall of Fame. “Chandler embodies and promotes our core values: he contributes his time and talents to the betterment of our school; his character is impeccable; his remarkable discipline and high performance standards yield excellent results; and in every community and at every turn he serves people with no fanfare or attention to himself,” Dr. Kupersmith remarked. Conveying the sentiments of many of Chandler’s previous coaches and teachers, Dr. Kupersmith expressed his appreciation to four coaches for prime material: David Wilcox, a record breaking soccer coach; R.J. Beach, Chandler’s basketball coach; Bobby Austell, Chandler’s tennis coach; and of course, Don Frost, Chandler’s football coach in his senior year, then on the cusp of the state championship run.

“Chandler played varsity soccer for two seasons (spring 2007 and spring 2008) on two of our stronger state championship teams, and was a key contributor his junior year. My greatest memory of Chandler's performance that season was the 25 yard rocket he smashed in the 26th minute of our third-round playoff game against Indian Land, which was the game-winner. We were in trouble that game, with all 3 senior captains out due to injury, and Chandler's goal completely shifted the trajectory of that game, one which could very easily not have gone our way if he hadn't lifted the team's spirits with that great finish.”
~ David Wilcox

“A shining example of his grace and tenacity under pressure. [Recounting a state championship in Chandler’s sophomore year that came down to one match.] No wonder he succeeds so well with 70,000 fans locked on him when he attempts a field goal. He turns inward and looks upward. His inner strength is fortified by Christian faith that puts a game and a play into perspective.”
~Bobby Austell

“What made Chandler a special basketball player is an attribute that most great players in any sport possess, and that is the ability to play some of their best games when the games are the most important. He was a tremendous pleasure to coach!”
~ R.J. Beach

“Chandler has always been a patient person and loves competition. He knew that he had to work hard and keep the faith that his opportunity would come. His favorite bible verse is Psalms 23 ‘thou shall not fear.’ Chandler’s hard work and dedication to be the best he can be has served him well. His integrity, dignity, respectability, worthiness, strength, and talent are virtues of a successful person. On a personal note Chandler is the humblest young man I have ever coached. He has always been a team player. He is and will always be a Cavalier. He continues to give back by sending inspirational videos shown at our banquet to the team, holding a kicking camp at CCES each year, and being an inspiration to players.”
~ Don Frost

A special announcement was made during half time of the Varsity Boys game, where Chandler exchanged high fives, hugs, and fist pumps with our current Cavaliers – some of whom are also Clemson Tigers and Charlotte Panthers. He was even kind enough to sign a few autographs on a commemorative trading card made for the event.
