All 6 Lower School Honor Choir Nominees Accepted into State Choir

We were thrilled to have all six Lower School Honor Choir nominees accepted into the South Carolina Music Educators Association State Elementary Honor Choir this year. Isadora Apple, Pierce Denson, Caroline Bruner, Grace Harrell, Kate Marguet, and Leigh Norris were nominated from our Lower School Choir!

Students sent an audition recording to the SCMEA organization and were all accepted into the choir. Approximately 600 children in fourth-sixth grade applied and 270 were accepted. All the students that tried out from CCES were accepted, which was not the case for most schools. After learning the Honor Choir music, they spent about nine hours in rehearsal with the entire choir of 270 students from all over the state, this past weekend. In addition, Lower School Music Teacher Joy Hughes held two extra practices a week for these six students for almost six weeks and spent hours with them preparing not only for their audition, but for the performance as well.

Under the direction of nationally known choral conductor and composer Rollo Dilworth, they performed on Saturday, Feb 9th at First Baptist Church for an audience of parents, teachers and many music educators from the music education conference, also being held in Columbia. Their music included a song from China, a piece by Dr. Dilworth in Latin, a spiritual, a jazz tune by Charlie Parker, a setting of a Shakespeare text and a setting of a prayer from 1514. It was said that our students handled themselves “with maturity and grace”.

What an amazing experience for these students! We congratulates and thank them for being such wonderful representatives of CCES!
