Spotlight On: Christa Bailey, CCES Class of 2019

Christ Church Episcopal School experiences have prepared graduating seniors for whatever comes next and to make a positive difference in the world. Each week, we will put the spotlight on a graduating senior from the Class of 2019.  We hope you enjoy getting to know these amazing CCES students!
 
If you know Christa Bailey, you know her love for all things culture and culinary! But nothing tops her affection for the Big Apple so it’s no surprise that her visit to Barnard College, in the heart of NYC, gave her all the feels. “Barnard,” she says, “is where I’m meant to be.”
 
Aside from the many opportunities Manhattan presents, Christa loves the diverse and lively student body, incredible career opportunities, and the challenging and nurturing college environment at Barnard. Because of its exceptionally early deadline, a hopeful yet confident Christa only applied Barnard and the University of Vermont, both of which accepted her. Plan B was to apply to Tufts University, Brown University, Wellesley College, and Smith College— not too shabby for a Plan B!
 
As a 13-year veteran, Christa has attended CCES since Primer. She reflects back on those 13 years saying, “It’s been amazing to grow up in a school where I feel both challenged academically, and fostered by my community. I also feel exceptionally prepared to continue my academic endeavors in college, which I certainly owe to CCES.” Barnard offers bachelor’s degrees in approximately 50 fields, as well as minors, double majors, design your own major, and special degree programs. Perfect for Christa who is motivated by a genuine love of learning, yet undecided on major right now.
 
Although CCES offers endless opportunities to be involved, the level of involvement has to be student-driven, and Christa has never shied away from extracurricular pursuits. She played field hockey for six years, noting the sport is just one example of an activity that makes Christ Church Episcopal School unique. CCES is the currently the only school in South Carolina with a field hockey team. In addition, she played lacrosse for two years, belonged to several athletic clubs, has been an active member of the choir, and has performed in multiple school plays. Beyond the aforementioned, she has also belonged to the Drama club, the People On Women’s Rights club, and Ethical Debate club, demonstrating her passion for equality and human rights issues.
 
Christa was awarded the Wake Forest Book Award in 11th grade, is a member of the NJCL Latin Honor Society, has achieved high honor roll or honor roll every semester, and has achieved AP Scholar status— a nod to her scholarly drive, genuine love of learning, and success in a demanding curriculum. Linda Schulz, Director of College Counseling stated, “I so admire Christa for her ability to find the beauty in the difficult.”
 
Mrs. Schulz notes, “Christa is an independent and self-reliant young women who is not afraid to follow her own pathway; she does not feel the need to adopt an ideology simply because it is popular. She exudes positivity and thinks deeply about her life, her scholarship pursuits, and her commitments.”
 
Barnard graduates are known to go on to make a powerful impact on the world. We’re certain Christa Bailey will achieve the extraordinary.

Favorite CCES Memory? The Young Artist Series! I’ve never performed, but attending is always the highlight of my year.
Who are your professional role models? Michelle Obama, Ibtihaj Muhammad, and Ina Garten. They inspire me to work hard and be confident in myself.
Three things you can’t go to college without? Scissors, tide sticks, headphones
What are you looking forward to in the remainder of your senior year? Just enjoying my last 3 months of CCES.
Favorite place you have traveled to? Barcelona!
