Spotlight On: James Stathakis, CCES Class of 2019

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications

James Stathakis is someone who knows how to look for the silver lining immediately.  He’s someone I’d be happy to have on my team and it’s no wonder he’s someone High Point University wants at their schoolFrom the moment he walked on the campus James says he “felt at home”.  A testament to the power of an open house, and importance of attending one, James recalls, “During the open house, I got to here from Nido Qubein, the President of the University.  His passion and drive to further every student’s education was inspiring and experiencing that in person made me realize that High Point is where I’m supposed to be.”  He says everyone that he saw on campus was energized and passionate about their education and High Point University— James should fit right in.

James applied to five schools, was accepted into all of them, but applied to High Point as an early decision applicant making it a binding contract. Regardless, High Point was always his top school.  He will major in Exercise Science with a Psychology minor on a Pre-Physical Therapy Track.

James started Christ Church Episcopal School in 9th grade after being at a Montessori school since he was two- years-old.  “CCES has been a blessing,” says James.  “It has given me so many opportunities that I would not have had a chance to experience.  For instance, this past summer I went on a study abroad trip to Spain where I became fully emerged into the culture.”

James has been a heavily involved student at CCES.  He’s ran Track and Field for three years and Cross Country for four, with a stint on the basketball team as well.  He is a Member of the Speech and Debate Club, Youth In Government, and a community service volunteer inside and outside of school.  In fact, James helps his elderly relatives and several of his neighbors by delivering lunches on Saturday, mowing their lawns, and taking their pets to the vet!  It has been said repeatedly, by both his coaches and teachers, “James works hard and shows up.”  Bring present— just one of the many qualities James possesses that will enliven his life.

“When I think of James Stathakis, I think of a positive attitude, a commitment to community, and a goal to learn something new every day,” said Lindsey Waters, Associate Director of College Counseling.  “Smart, compassionate, inclusive, and brave, James takes risks and loves meeting new people.”

High Point University is an extraordinary education, and James Stathakis is an exceptional individual.  It is rare that a young person can find joy in what they are doing, gratitude in being able to do it, and appreciation of the ride.  James’ contribution to community, academic attributes, and personal qualities will serve him well in college and beyond.
