Spotlight On: Virginia Weston, CCES Class of 2019
Virginia Weston is getting ready to close a chapter in her life— one that opened with her admission to Christ Church Episcopal School as a 6th grader— and closes in May when she graduates and prepares to fill her next chapter as a “General” at Washington and Lee University.
Upon looking up Washington and Lee’s mascot and realizing they were the Generals, I couldn’t think of a mascot more appropriate for Virginia. She is a General through and through. Generals have force of intellect, competence, and a keen intuition— check. Good generals have energy— there is seldom a time when this senior is not busy, and she balances it all with a smile. Generals influence the battle with their presence— Virginia’s teachers describe her as someone who has a “great attitude and makes substantive contributions to the classroom.”
Indeed, she chose wisely. Virginia applied to several other schools including the University of Richmond, Sewanee, Miami University, University of Ohio, and the University of South Carolina, many to which she was accepted. She heard back from Washington & Lee early decision, consequently withdrawing her other applications. Virginia says she chose the storied University, three hours outside of Washington, D.C. in historic Lexington, Virginia, because she wanted a liberal arts education. Like most high achieving students, Virginia has always pursued a myriad of academic interests. However, Virginia does it with an effortless comfort and authenticity— she’s not trying to build a resume, she’s sincerely guided by a zest for learning. She has loved the small class sizes she has grown accustomed to at CCES, so a small school where her “voice could be heard,” she says was also very attractive.
Virginia plans to study Computer Science and most likely Business. “Washington and Lee is the perfect place to study business, and their computer science department is rapidly growing so I was interested in contributing to that growth,” she said. Her interest in computer science is relatively recent. Just last year as a junior, she signed up for Computer Science on a whim. Virginia is not only the only female in her class, she is the only senior female enrolled in Computer Science. “The information somehow clicked in my head and I have pursued the subject ever since,” she says. “I am currently in AP Computer Science and loving it.”
“In many ways,” she goes on to say, “CCES has shaped my personal identity because Christ Church has taught me to be flexible to change and to have a positive outlook on new things. Also, as a two sport athlete, CCES has been great for balancing a rigorous course load as well as many extracurriculars.”

An athlete most of her life, Virginia plays both Varsity Field Hockey and Varsity Lacrosse. She also chairs the Prom Committee, was a poll worker in the 2018 midterm elections, traveled to Ecuador on a Mission Trip with Ms. Jarrett, Director of Service and Experiential Learning, has participated in the Clemson Declamation Contest, and is a member of Youth in Government, Spanish Club, Environmental Club, and Cure Club. She’s graced the High Honor Roll (9th & 11th) and Honor Roll (10th & 12th) lists every year of Upper School, is an AP Scholar (with honor), and has received multiple National Spanish Exam recognitions (Level 3 Bronze medal and Level 4 honorable mention).
Lindsay Waters, Associate Director of College Counseling says, “Virginia is an impressive student who takes on new academic challenges and handles the added rigor with a calm and realistic perspective. She has a great attitude and makes substantive contributions to the classroom environment. Passionate, outgoing, and authentic, I know Virginia will make a difference on Washington and Lee’s campus.”
