Spotlight On: Camp Williams, CCES Class of 2019

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications

Everybody in and around the Cavalier campus knows Frank “Camp” Williams. Soon, the 1,692 students enrolled at Wofford College will know him as well, because I am quite certain Camp has never met a stranger. “He’s upbeat, personable, and respectful and possesses an amazing ability to talk and connect with young children and adults alike,” said Bartley Sides, Associate College Counselor. “He’s revered by his peers and adored by his teachers.”

Camp applied to Texas Christian University, the University of Georgia, the University of Virginia, and Clemson University, but it is no surprise that he chose the private, independent, liberal arts college in downtown Spartanburg. The family atmosphere and tight-knit Terrier community parallels that of the Cavaliers’. Camp will relish that community and, “the ability to know most of the people at the school,” while also benefitting from Wofford’s broad distribution of courses across the liberal arts curriculum. He is hoping to major in Biology and take a track of study that will put him on the pre-dental route.

Camp is a 13-year veteran of CCES, meaning he has been a student here since his Primer year. He credits CCES as allowing him to explore and discover his true self through many different means; music, athletics, academics, and leadership roles. Camp is gifted with the power of interest, which has driven his learning and resulted in his heavy involvement in a variety of areas. In fact, he may have one of the most diverse resumes of any student in this year’s senior class. Camp has been a member of everything from Shag Club and Spanish Club to The Walking Dead Club! He’s been a drummer going on 13 years, beginning in kindergarten, and even performed last year as a part of an ensemble during our semi-annual Young Artists Series. He’s gone on the Ecuador Mission Trip, was a silver medalist on the national Spanish exam, and has achieved honor roll every year of upper school, all while maintaining a part-time job at Coast Apparel. “CCES has allowed me to grow up with the same people my whole life, some of them are my best friends,” Camp said. “It has been so cool to watch each other grow and excel in the different paths we have taken.”

While he may be a butterfly in and around campus, he’s a beast on the playing fields. Camp has been a vital member of the varsity football team and has played midfield on the varsity lacrosse team since 9th grade. He has captained both teams and shown that not only is he a dynamic team player, he is a constant source of support and encouragement for his teammates.

Additionally, Camp is co-chair of our student ambassadors, meaning he joins our Admission associates in representing CCES at Open Houses and community events. As an ambassador, Camp provides invaluable insight to prospective students and parents and helps them understand what it means to be a student at CCES. As a co-chair, he goes the extra mile in leading the student ambassador group, pairing current CCES students with new students, coordinating events, and making himself available when a tour guide is needed. “Being an ambassador has been an amazing experience for me,” he says. “It taught me how to interact with people older and younger than me, and it has taught me to always be inclusive and be a friendly face to anyone who enters whatever community I will be a part of in the future.”

Camp will work diligently in the Wofford classroom as he has at CCES, and he will do it all with a smile. “But most of all,” says Mr. Sides, “Camp will be engaged and active. He will greet the stranger and chase after a professor just to say hello.” The Wofford community will be lucky to welcome him as a member of the class of 2023.
