Dr. Bryan Kirby Wins Award for Outstanding Teaching of German

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications
Congratulations to German Teacher Dr. Bryan Kirby who received the Klett-USA Award this year for outstanding teaching of German from the South Carolina chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German.

“Dr. Kirby has a demonstrated commitment to the teaching of the German language in South Carolina through his yearly participation in the National German Exam. Some of the fruit of his work can be seen in the high performance of his students. Four of his students received silver or bronze medals this year on the National German Exam, and four others received Achievement Awards,” said Brenda Cittansen, Testing Chair of the AATG-SC Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German for the National German Exam.

CCES students showed remarkable achievements on the 2019 National German Exam.  The National German Exam is a relevant and challenging assessment of student learning, delivered to students via computer using only authentic materials-text, video, and podcasts created for native German speakers for use by native German speakers.  As you can imagine, the exam is quite a challenge for students who are learning a new language.  Students who score at or above the 70th percentile on the exam are awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals.  Four CCES students achieved a medal this year, evidence of Dr. Kirby’s dedication to his students both inside and outside the classroom.  “It is clear that he is a teacher who invests in his students' lives and one who cares deeply about their success not only in German but also as young world citizens,” said Cittansen.

“At a time when some schools are giving less attention to the importance of world languages, we congratulate CCES and Dr. Kirby for their support.”
