Students Excelling in the Arts

Caroline Glazebrook
We recently reached out to art teachers across all divisions to find out who has gone the extra mile to really pursue their passions. As you can imagine talent abounds, but here are just some of these amazing go-getters:

Kailee Morgan '19

Kailee has spent most of the school year sewing, a craft she learned from her grandmother. Kailee has dedicated a lot of her time to perfecting this talent and she even set a goal to design and make her own prom dress for her final project in her Art Honors Art class. The outcome? After a trip to Hobby Lobby and many hours of work, the result was one of the most elegant prom dresses we’ve seen!

Cindy Xu '20
Always reaching above and beyond, Cindy chooses many difficult mediums without fear and creates intricate and time consuming work. Cindy’s attention to detail can be seen in her “tiny rooms” display which requires hours of hammering in nails that are then wrapped with yarn or thread. Cindy has chosen to do several low-relief carvings in clay for her final piece that will take the remainder of the school year and over the summer to complete. (Only one piece was required for this assignment.)

Emi Amaki '20
Emi prefers to work with big ideas and new mediums that take extra time, effort, research, and risk. She built a 4-foot clay sculpture in sections, and she has chosen wood block printmaking as a medium for her final piece this year. Both are very daunting tasks, but Emi is always up for the challenge.

Twyla Roberts '21
Twyla is a thoughtful and passionate singer and actress. She is focused on being the best she can be in choir and also on stage. Twyla is one of the most experienced performers, with extensive training through the South Carolina Children's Theatre, middle and upper school shows. This puts her in a position to explain terms or answer general questions that less experienced performers may have, which she provides in a helpful tone that can ease a fellow actor's mind. She pushes herself and is a wonderful role model for her peers. Twyla has been a leader in the choir and was a stand-out in the Upper School musical Bye, Bye, Birdie as Kim McAfee.

Megan Allen, '20
A dedicated performing arts student, Megan thrives in music and theater and brings a high level of skill and leadership to choir and theater productions. Megan has been a leader in the choir and on stage. Megan is capable of getting her castmates to excel without it being a demand or overwhelming them. She has always been one of the first students to learn choreography and encourage the other dancers to review and be their best. She performed in the European choir tour over spring break and was a featured performer in the musical Bye, Bye, Birdie.

Fini Scheiner '25
Fini is an extremely self-motivated artist.  She devotes extra time outside of class to her many projects and enjoys teaching others. In the Middle School Fiber Arts Club, she has taught a group of girls how to knit using their fingers, which has brought a lot of joy to the club. She also brings artwork from home to share with her class and inspires other students.

Julia Nakuma ‘26
Julia’s teachers agree that her work ethic is impressive. Julia is part of the 5th/6th Grade Choir, Show Choir, and a cast member in the upcoming production of Willy Wonka Jr. She also plays trombone in the band. If Julia doesn’t understand something, she works hard to figure out. She accepts feedback with a nod and then applies it right away without complaint.  To top it off, she is courteous, kind, and humble.  Julia is reliable and a constant positive force in the classroom and at musical rehearsals.

Angel Guo ‘23
Angel is in 7th/8th Grade Choir and Show Choir, as well as a cast member of Willy Wonka Jr.  Angel goes out of her way to be a part of choir and almost never misses a rehearsal.  She loves to ask questions in class and is always focused on improvement.  She has a wonderful talent, and I know she will continue on in music.

Kevin Connaughton ‘19
Kevin is a member of the US choir, the boys a capella ensemble, and has been an active participant in the Upper School theatre program. Kevin has a wonderful combination of intellect, talent, drive and humor. He is able to balance an extremely heavy academic course load with extra-curricular activities and service, all with a smile on his face. This year Kevin continued a tradition of creating original work he started with his Sophomore Project. Sophomore year, he wrote and produced a Commedia Dell'arte play. This year, he wrote and produced a three act murder mystery radio play. He never makes excuses, never complains about being tired, and never has a negative outlook. Kevin amazes us with his positive, gentle, enthusiastic and empathetic, personality.

Alina Uguz ‘27
Multi-talented, Alina plays piano, the Chinese hulusi flute, and the recorder. She has strong music training from studying piano in China. She plays a Chinese hulusi gourd flute, and she picked up the recorder easily over the past couple of years. She understands melodies and rhythms almost immediately in music class, and she is a help to everyone around her.

Caroline Bruner ‘27
Already an incredibly focused and diligent musician, Caroline plays violin at the Fine Arts Center through the after-school ARMES Program. She plays in the Prelude Orchestra which is an ensemble within the Greenville County Youth Orchestra. She is a leader in the Lower School choir at CCES and she was one of the six students from CCES who made it into the South Carolina Music Educators Association State Elementary Honor Choir. Independently, she has played through books one and two in our 4th grade curriculum. Caroline's love of music, her quest for learning, and natural leadership skills make her a remarkable student.

Michael Zheng ‘25
A 6th grade violinist, Michael works hard to perfect his playing skills by practicing his violin an hour a day. He is a member of the Carolina Youth Symphony and will be auditioning soon for a position in their top orchestra.
