4th Graders Submit Essays to Conduct for the Greenville Symphony Orchestra

Lower School Music Teacher, Joy Hughes presented 4th graders with an exciting opportunity - to conduct for the Greenville Symphony Orchestra! Each year, the GSO looks for 1-2 students from the Upstate to help conduct their Michelin Children's Concert. Students were asked to write an essay that answers the following questions:

  • Why would you like to conduct the Greenville Symphony Orchestra?
  • What are some reasons that you enjoy music?
  • What music do you participate in at school or outside of school (choir, percussion, handbells, guitars, drum lessons, piano, other)?
  • What are you interested in learning in music?
  • What do you think makes a good leader?
  • What qualities do you have that might make you a good leader or conductor?
While the contest was completely optional, Mrs. Hughes received 8 essays! Below are some excerpts of our favorite responses:

I enjoy music because music is wonderful and the sounds are beautiful. -Alina

One thing I love about music is performing. I love being on stage in front of people...I think a great leader takes great skill and focus because if you mess up, the orchestra is going to follow you and there is no turning back. -Kate

I would like to conduct because I love music and I think it would be a good opportunity to learn about music. I enjoy music because it's calm and not stressful. -Julia

I enjoy how you have to work together and how you need to open your ears... To be a good leader you need to be kind, thoughtful, and need to be able to say what you feel like. -Teag

To be a good leader, a person should be brave, kind, set a good example for others, and have a heart to help those around them. -Caroline

I enjoy music because it makes me feel happy inside and gives me gladness. A good leader is always practicing, working hard, paying attenion, and loving it. -Anna

A thing I love about music is performing. I love being on stage in front of people. One thing that makes me a good leader is I love people. I love singing and I love to make people laugh. -Grace
