Closz Brothers Make Dreams a Reality

Caroline Glazebrook
At the start of the 2016-17 school year, the CCES Arts Department hired Sean Closz as the Middle School Choral teacher. Prior to his time at CCES Sean spent five years as the Director of Choral Music at Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville, NC. Before that he worked for four years as the Director of Choral and General Music at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Middle School also in Fayetteville, NC. Sean has successfully conducted numerous choral performances, spring musicals, and general music classes.

It probably goes without saying that Sean comes from a very musical family. Sean and his two brothers grew up taking piano, string, and voice lessons. “Our parents are firm believers in the power of music to shape and inspire,” Sean remembers fondly. Fast forward to 2019 and ALL THREE brothers are choir directors. These three apples have not fallen far from the tree.

The Closz brothers have always dreamed of getting their choir groups together to sing as one voice and to experience the power music has to bring people together. “Once I moved from Michigan to North Carolina, then to South Carolina, we knew the only way to make this happen was through touring groups. My brother, Brendan, took over the choir director position at Howell High School in Michigan three years ago. Since the choir from Howell High School have taken part in a Spring Choir Tour for the past 39 years, we knew this could be our chance.”

Last fall, the brothers began to plan. With the support of administrators from both CCES and Howell High School the brothers found a date that worked! On Friday, April 26th Sean and his brother Brendan carried out a lifelong dream of theirs. CCES was the first stop on the Howell High School Choir Tour. CCES Middle School choir students gathered in the Hartness Performing Arts Center and listened while the Howell choir students performed. Students from both schools then took turns serenading each other and ultimately sang together. The power of music was evident that day and what was once a dream became a reality.
