Spotlight On: Anil Chandler, CCES Class of 2019
We all know someone who is just inherently likeable. Anil Chandler is that person. His perpetually likeable status may be a result of his sincerity, transparency, positivity, and humility, but whatever it is I know one thing for sure; it doesn’t matter how smart or talented, or good at your job you are, if you don't relate well with people, you're not going anywhere. Anil has found the perfect formula—he beholds the exact mixture of traits.
A good student, son, and friend, he has a strong moral compass and prioritizes his family and his community. His College Counselor Lindsey Waters says that in 11th grade, college counselors ask students to draw a picture of themselves in college so they can express some of their priorities in finding an institution that is the best fit for them. “Anil is the only one of my students who didn’t just draw himself, but a huge group of peers with the note ‘good friends.’ Inclusive and kind,” she says, “Anil is talented at widening a circle of friends for himself, but also for others.” This is rare, noteworthy, and perhaps one of the most impressive qualities than Anil embodies.
So it comes as no surprise that Anil is rooming with good friend and fellow CCES Class of 2019 graduate Jack Sasser this fall at the College of Charleston. Anil’s maternal side of the family takes a big trip each summer so he’s no stranger to beautiful places; but while all destinations have their merit, one can’t deny the cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pastel antebellum houses overlooking the harbor, that are Charleston, South Carolina. While Anil appreciated the beauty of the campus on his two visits, what stood out to him was the friendliness of the students and teachers. Anil also applied to Clemson University, Wofford College, The University of South Carolina, the University of Georgia, James Madison University, and Auburn University. He is hoping to graduate on a pre-med track and attend MUSC after getting a degree in either biology or chemistry.
Just as each one of Anil’s family trips brings with it some treasured moments of life, Anil has cherished his time at CCES, which began as a first grader. He describes his experience at CCES as very welcoming. “Both faculty and students are very warm and inviting,” he said. “I really enjoyed the time I’ve spent and the experiences I’ve had here.”
Anil is nothing if not levelheaded, mature, and equitable. In fact, he was selected to be a part of the student committee to interview candidates for our Senior Chaplain and Assistant Headmaster positions. To have a voice in those important decisions is quite the honor. “It felt special,” he said. “Even though it was getting close to my senior year and knowing that I wouldn’t be here for years to come, I felt like I could make an impact for the school by helping choose the right candidates.”
Anil, like many CCES students, defies typical stereotypes by participating in sports, music, and drama. Not only is he a fine athlete, contributing to the JV and Varsity football and soccer teams during his middle and upper school years, he sings in the choir, was the lead dancer in our spring musical “Oklahoma!,” and has served as a student ambassador, regularly welcoming people to the school. On top of being a regular Honor Roll achiever, Anil is a Cavalier Spirit Award recipient— an award given in recognition of a girl and a boy from the Ninth and Tenth Grade who exemplify the Cavalier Spirit, characterized by integrity, enthusiasm, outreach to others, and cooperation. This year, he was voted Homegoing King.
Mrs. Waters says, “Whether on the athletic field or on stage, Anil carries himself with the quiet confidence of someone who is comfortable with himself and doesn’t feel the need to prove something to anyone.”

If you could create one mandatory course for seniors, what would it be? A life-skill class. One that taught us how to do certain things like finance and fixing a flat tire.
Best family trip you’ve taken? Italy, about 17 of us went to Florence for a week!
