Greenville News All Upstate Sports Awards

Last Thursday night, May 23, the Greenville News held their annual Upstate Sports Awards at the Greenville Convention Center. They recognized over 500 athletes from 22 different schools in the upstate for their individual and team accomplishments this year. Athletes were named to the first and second teams for each individual sport. One athlete from each sport was awarded Player of the Year and there were other additional awards, including Male/Female Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year.
 
CCES had 30 athletes who were recognized on Thursday night, 13 on the first team and 17 on the second team! Four athletes were nominated for Player of the Year in their respective sports: Peyton Gillespie (golf), Day Nuckolls (tennis), Marissa Powe (basketball), and Taylor Roberts (lacrosse). Day Nuckolls won POY for Girls Tennis; her accomplishments include winning the state championship and placing 2nd at the state singles tournament. Marissa Powe won POY for Girls Basketball; her accomplishments include averaging 17.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 3.7 spg, and winning the state championship this year.
 
The 13 athletes named to first teams are: Sophie Calderon-Squire (lacrosse), Nathan DePiero (swimming), Eliza Easterby (lacrosse), Kate Faris (lacrosse), Peyton Gillespie (golf), Will James (lacrosse), Annie Jennings (tennis), Day Nuckolls (tennis), Marissa Powe (basketball), Rafe Reynolds (golf), Ayana Richburg (track and field), Taylor Roberts (lacrosse), and Hailey Sanders (lacrosse).
 
The 17 athletes named to second teams are: Sarah Allen (tennis), Aiden Bell (soccer), John Butler Jr. (basketball), Mary Cage Carter (tennis), Claire DePiero (swimming), Alec DiBattista (swimming), Mollie Folk (swimming), Diana Geary (swimming), Alexandra Katz (swimming), McCall King (basketball), Chapman Mann (lacrosse), Kailee Morgan (swimming), Paddy-Shea Nary (lacrosse), Gracie Patat (lacrosse), Ric Philpot (tennis), Nele Stroebel (swimming), and Finn Waigand (track and field).
 
Congratulations to these 30 athletes for all their accomplishments and hard work this year. Go Cavs!
