Catherine Shoffner Selected to Attend Student Athlete Leadership Conference

by Kim Gendron, Athletics Social Media Coordinator

Senior Catherine Shoffner had a unique opportunity this summer. She traveled to Indianapolis in July for a three-day, student leadership conference put on by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). Catherine was joined by two other SC students: Na’ala Littlejohn (Ashley Ridge HS) and Aaron Parker (Hemingway HS), all three of whom serve as members of the Student Athlete Advisory Council for the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL).

The conference focused on helping student athletes improve their leadership skills and understanding how they can apply those to their various sports. Catherine was a member of the inaugural Student Athlete Advisory Council last year and looks to build upon that for this upcoming school year. She hopes to take all that she has learned through her experience, both on the council and at the conference, to teach other student leaders at CCES.

Another aspect Catherine really values is service. She notes that a highlight of the conference was teaming up with Special Olympic athletes one afternoon and working with them on different activities and challenges. She wants to implement more service projects this year with the goal of uniting high school athletes all across the state of South Carolina.

Overall, Catherine states that the conference was “a wonderful experience.” She was able to “greatly improve her leadership and communication skills” and had the opportunity “to meet different athletes from all over the country who brought new perspectives.” We’re excited to see what Catherine’s second year on the council has in store as well as the various ways she looks to implement what she learned this summer in Indianapolis.
