CCES Alumni Celebrate at the 21st Annual Sports Hall of Fame Alumni Dinner
On September 27th, 2019, prior to the Homecoming football game against Hilton Head High School, CCES alumni, family, and friends gathered to celebrate several alumni awards and to welcome our newest inductee into the CCES Sports Hall of Fame.
President of the CCES Alumni Association, Emily Bridges ’08, presented the alumni awards.
The first, The Cheves Achievement Award, recognizes those alumni classes with the highest total dollars given and the highest participation in Annual Giving. The Class of 1982 was this year’s winner and representing their classmates were Elizabeth Jarrett and Mike Sierra. The second award goes to the class with the highest percentage of participation in annual giving. For the second year in a row, the Class of 1987 has led the way, and representing their classmates were Morgan Buffington, Jonathan Breazeale, and Caroline Bethel.
The 2018-19 Marguerite Ramage Wyche Alumni Service Award, given in honor of Marguerite who created the CCES Alumni Association, honors a very special alum for extraordinary loyalty and service to the school. This year’s winner was Andy Waters ‘04.
The Mary B. Roper Distinguished Teacher Award, which honors a current or former faculty member who has demonstrated genuine interest and involvement in our alumni and alumni endeavors, was awarded to Elizabeth Sterling Jarrett ‘82.
Next, was a very special recognition of Coach Don Frost, who served CCES from 2008 to 2019 both in and out of the classroom as an Upper School PE Instructor and Head Varsity Football Coach. His tenure transformed CCES Varsity Football with a record 55 consecutive wins, and four straight 1-A Varsity Football State Championships! Three of his former football players, Robert DiBenedetto ’10, Quan White ’10, and Nicholas Taylor ’14 spoke on behalf of Don. During his acceptance, he remarked, “I am humbled and honored by the kind words and fond memories shared by such fine young men. You, like so many CCES football players I had the privilege to coach, have always made me proud.”
Athletic Director Molly Miller introduced the Sports Hall of Fame presenter, Shane Taylor, who inducted our very first “Special Contributor” to the CCES Hall of Fame, Rodney Hinton. This third nominating category is in addition to the categories of athlete and coach. Nominees in this category will have served CCES Athletics for at least 7 years, and contributed significantly to the program through their leadership, inspiration, and support. “Rodney, your involvement and influence on CCES Athletics have not only led to state record winning streaks and numerous multiple sport state championships, but you have shown coaches, players, families and fans what life success through athletics should look like,” said Shane.
Shane mentioned 4 additional contributions that Rodney has made to CCES— he initiated the Prayer Walk which encourages now not only Men of Influence, but People of Influence in the players lives to get together to pray for their sons and for the team to have a healthy and positive season; he served as Booster Club President and while under his leadership CCES sports programs experienced tremendous growth and momentum; he has served as a coach and encourager for countless programs and athletes; and he held a seat on the Board of Trustees for eight years.
Don Frost commented, “Rodney was the first Director Of Football Operations at CCES. He was the driving force behind all of the sports getting parents involved in their children’s teams. He worked tirelessly behind the scenes by painting goal posts, volunteering to chaperone, being a ball man, teaching ballology, being supportive of all sports at CCES, being a friend as well as performing many other meaningful roles at CCES. His dedication to the Athletics as well as the Academics at CCES has been phenomenal. He has set standards and goals we need to always strive for. His love of sports and the lessons they teach athletes is why he is the perfect person to be inducted into the CCES Sports Hall of Fame.”
