Senior and Honor Council Chair Megan Allen Speaks to Lower School for Red Ribbon Chapel

Below are the prepared notes from the homily delivered by Megan Allen, CCES Class of 2020 and Honor Council Chair, for Lower School Red Ribbon Chapels on October 30th, 2019.

Good Morning everyone! Thank you for inviting me to chapel this morning! As Mrs. Valerie mentioned, my name is Megan Allen and I am a senior this year.

It certainly does not seem very long ago that I was sitting where you are. Looking at all of you reminds me how special our school is. I have been at Christ Church since I was a primer, and I have enjoyed being a part of a family that always helps us make good choices. You might not realize it, but from the moment you arrive at CCES, you are surrounded by important CCES values. These beliefs, which are so important at our school, are honesty, trust and integrity. Honesty lets us be real with ourselves and others about who we are. Trust is simply having faith. Integrity is a really big word, but it simply means doing the right thing even when no one is watching. All three of these central ideas— honesty, trust and integrity— should guide us as we go through every single day and think about making good choices.

Sometimes we don’t make the right decisions. We say unkind things to a friend or we leave someone out of a group. We might not always use our best effort when finishing our schoolwork. However, remember, we all make mistakes and occasionally lose our way— and that is okay. We have our teachers and our friends around us who will always forgive us and help guide us back onto the right path.

One of my favorite Bible verses is from the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus tells us we are the light of the world and asks us to, “...let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Always remember to let your light shine, and when it isn’t shining bright, look around you for someone else’s light to help guide you!

I am going to leave you with one of my favorite quotes by the wise headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore. Dumbledore is speaking to Harry Potter after something bad has happened and all hope seems to be lost. Dumbledore explains to Harry that difficult choices lie ahead. He tells him, “We must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy.” Always remember this and try to stop for a moment and think when you are faced with a tough choice— I know you will make the right one!
