Two CCES Student-Athletes Sign to Play Collegiate Athletics

 

Christ Church Episcopal School celebrated the successes of two of our senior athletes yesterday, February 5, during a signing ceremony. Family, friends, and school officials gathered to watch Paddy-Shea Nary and Marissa Powe sign letters of intent. Paddy-Shea will be playing lacrosse at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA and Marissa Powe will be playing basketball at the University of Chicago in Chicago, IL.

 

Athletic Director Molly Miller thanked family, coaches, administration, teachers, friends and teammates for their support both in athletic endeavors and in the classroom as they have helped to shape each of these seniors into the students, athletes and people they are today. Molly went on to expand on both students, sharing quotes from their teachers and coaches.

 

Paddy-Shea Nary has been a member of the CCES community and varsity lacrosse team since the 10^th grade. He is described by teachers as “hard-working, conscientious, self-motivated, dedicated, a problem solver, and a forward thinker.” One teacher calls him a “breath of fresh air.”

 

Molly shared the words of Coach Joe Cummings, who states: “I have been fortunate to know Paddy-Shea for a long time, and I am grateful to know him.” Cummings shares: “Paddy has had the vision to play Division I lacrosse since I’ve known him, and his vision combined with hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and a growth mindset has put him in [this] position.” Coach Cummings goes on to describe Paddy as a leader who “balances a relentless competitive spirit with a team-first mentality” and states: “For Paddy, today stems from 12 years of dedication to this sport. When asked what he will most, he says the friendships he has made with teammates and the relationships formed with our coaching staff.”

 

Marissa Powe has been a part of the CCES community and the varsity basketball team since the 9^th grade. Her teachers describer Marissa as “considerate, empathetic, an advocate for others, a curious thinker, joyful and kind.” One teacher states: “her success is a strong testament to her work ethic and dedication to always improving.”

 

Molly shared the words of Coach Ja’Net Vicks who states: “I’ve had the pleasure of coaching Marissa for the past four years.” Vicks describes Powe as a “confident and extraordinary young lady” and shares: “I look forward to seeing her bright smile and dry humor every day in practice.” Coach Vicks continues: “I am so proud of Marissa and cannot wait to see the bright future ahead. This day comes after 11 or so years of developing her basketball skills. She is looking forward to a strong finish with her team and notes that the relationships formed are what she will miss the most.”

 

Congratulations to Paddy-Shea and Marissa on signing their letters of intent! While yesterday signifies a new chapter, they still have plenty left here. Marissa and her team will finish out their regular season in the next few weeks and have their sights set on defending their state title. Paddy-Shea and his team just started week one of their season and have big goals for what they want to accomplish. Although they will soon be competing for different teams, we will cherish the time they still have here and they will always be Cavaliers to us! Go Cavs!
