Spotlight On: Micah Shetterly, Class of 2020

by Jamie Bryant, Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications

Christ Church Episcopal School experiences have prepared graduating seniors for whatever comes next and to make a positive difference in the world. Each week, we will put the spotlight on a graduating senior from the Class of 2020.  We hope you enjoy getting to know these amazing CCES students!

Thirteen years as a CCES student has prepared Micah Shetterly extremely well for college.  The most valid assessment of her readiness — the meaningful relationships she has formed with not only her peers, but also the faculty who she says have helped “deepen her desire for knowledge and pushed her to reach for high goals.”  Speaking of high goals, Micah is the only female pole-vaulter at CCES. “It was never something I imagined myself doing,” she said, “but my cross country coach said he thought I looked like a pole vaulter and encouraged me to try it.” She took a risk, tried something that most people will never get a chance to attempt, and found new friendships along the way that she has grown to cherish.  One might even say she flew right over her goals! Micah was also a varsity Cheerleader for five years, serving as captain for her last two years, ran cross country and track, was part of the Upper School musical her freshman year, leader of Students In Action Club for three years, and on Vestry Club for two years, serving as leader her senior year.

Vestry is something Micah says became a highlight of her week and one of the things she will cherish most as she looks back on her time at CCES.  “It has allowed me to become very close to our Chaplain team, and grow immensely in my faith,” she shares. “Students at CCES are incredibly fortunate to have the Chaplain team as a resource in their faith journey and as mentors in their life during a really difficult time.”  Micah had the honor of receiving the Tulane Book Award for excellence in academics, leadership, and public service. She has earned high honors every semester and a medal for the National Spanish Exam each year. She also represented CCES at the South Carolina Youth Leadership Conference during her sophomore year.

“Micah has been a conscientious and thoughtful scholar throughout her CCES career,” said Linda Schulz, Director of College Counseling.  “She is respected by her teachers for her work ethic and positive approach to learning. Micah possesses the natural intellect, the desire to learn, the independence, and the perseverance to face challenges presented to her in college and beyond.”
Micah applied to a handful of schools including Clemson University, Tulane University, Wofford College, the University of Virginia, Wake Forest University, and the College of Charleston. Clemson was the first school she heard back from, and the place she had immediately felt she belonged, so much so that she submitted her deposit the very next day!  “I chose Clemson because the school feels like a family to me,” said Micah. She knew, much like CCES, this was the type of community she wanted to be associated with for life. Micah will enter the prestigious nursing program at Clemson this fall and plans to pursue her doctorate one day as a nurse anesthetist.

In Micah’s own words, her three favorite things about CCES that are unique and have had a vast impact on her life outside of school have been: 1) a focus on service; 2) religion; and 3) creativity.  “Because of the incredible people that make these programs possible at our school, I have had a unique education that I truly believe no other school could have given me.”

JUST FOR FUN!

If you could relive any CCES experience, what would it be? The lockdown we had during my fourth-grade year. Most scary times are actually great for bonding and creating unique memories that you won't forget as long as you are able to make the best of the situation. We had an ice cream party in the dark while watching the movie "Akeelah and the Bee."

What are three adjectives you would use to describe yourself? Relentless desire for growth, sincere, and caring.

If you could create one mandatory course for seniors, what would it be? It would be called, Creative Outlet. The class would start out by teaching the importance of a creative outlet for one's mental health, and then each student would be able to pick anything in the creative spectrum to work on during the course.

If you could be talented in an event that you don't currently do, which would it be and why? Singing because I think songs are very powerful.

Favorite Netflix series? Young and Hungry
