SPOTLIGHT ON: Belle Fortson, CCES CLASS OF 2020

Christ Church Episcopal School experiences have prepared graduating seniors for whatever comes next and to make a positive difference in the world. Each week, we will put the spotlight on a graduating senior from the Class of 2020.  We hope you enjoy getting to know these amazing CCES students!
 
 
Belle Fortson is truly one in a million. Her friends describe her as kind, thoughtful, and humorous. Her teachers describe her as dedicated and engaged. Her College Counselor, Linda Schulz, says that “Belle has a gentle soul and a wonderfully caring demeanor.” Above all, she is humble. I’m not even sure she thinks about herself at all, which is why I’m so pleased to share her wonderful attributes with the community through this spotlight. Indeed— one in a million.
 
Belle entered CCES in the 6th grade, but says it feels like she has been a part of the CCES community forever. The Cavalier community would concur. “I have overall loved my experience at CCES,” she states. “I have made so many friends and learned so many skills both in life and education. I feel completely and totally prepared for my college classes due to the rigor of the courses at CCES.” Mrs. Schulz describes her as a self-motivated, intelligent, compassionate and community-minded young woman. “It is a joy to know and work with Belle Fortson,” she says. Her sentiments echo those of Belle’s teachers, coaches, and friends.
 
Belle has been a participant on both the cross-country and lacrosse teams. She has also been a valued member of the yearbook staff since 10th grade and currently serves as one of its editors. She acted as Prom Chair last year, and is currently an intern at a CCES alumni-owned website design company, Word of Web, where she handles all of their social media accounts. “I absolutely love my internship,” she claims! “It gives me the opportunity to learn about a world of business and young professionals that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to.” A member of the National Spanish Honors Society, Belle has been on Honor Roll her entire time at CCES, and even received an AP Scholar award this year.
 
Belle has always loved the city of Charleston, so it is no surprise she is off to the Holy City this fall to attend the College of Charleston. She was accepted into the University of Georgia Honors, University of South Carolina Honors, Clemson, and the University of Miami, but chose MUSC due to its proximity to the MUSC campus. She plans to double major in Biology and Spanish and later attend MUSC to specialize in pediatrics. Always thinking conscientiously, Belle noted that The College of Charleston’s Honors College offers many opportunities for internships and research for Pre-Med students through MUSC.
 
In addition to having the wit, the kindness, and the smarts, Belle is completely fluent in Spanish! She attended a language immersion elementary school and has continued to master the Spanish language. Belle absolutely loves peaking Spanish, saying “it opens the door to forming relationships and engaging in conversation with so many more people.” She is currently tutoring several students who are enrolled in a Spanish Immersion Program in Columbia, SC, and are out of school as a result of the pandemic.
 
In seven short years, the Cavalier community has felt Belle’s presence— she will undoubtedly leave her mark at CofC and whatever else she touches in her promising, bright future.

Favorite CCES memory? Spending this last year with all of my friends has been amazing, and I will cherish every memory we have made together.
Where in the world would you like to get lost? I would want to get lost anywhere in Spain. I love the country and would love to just be able to navigate a city and learn about it through experience.
What is your favorite community organization? Upstate Restaurant Rescue. Word of Web was involved in making the website, and the company is currently raising money for restaurant workers affected by a loss of income due to the pandemic.
If you could spend an afternoon with anyone, who would it be and why? My mom's grandmother. I have never met her, but I have always heard stories about what an amazing woman she was. She taught my mom so many life lessons, and people always tell me how kind she was. She was also a really good cook and taught my mom how to cook, so I would love to learn that as well.
Tell us something people probably don’t know about you. I love to do photography in my free time.
