5 CCES Students Present as Part of the GOA Catalyst Conference

by Paulette Unger, Upper School Biology Teacher & Global Online Academy Site Director & Instructor

The Global Online Academy’s online Catalyst Conference took place last week and five of our CCES students had projects at the conference. The annual conference is an online event featuring student projects from around the world. Teachers are invited to bring their students to the conference to learn from and engage with peers who are committed to making change in their communities.

Student presenters worked on capstone projects in response to this prompt: How opportunities for advocacy exist in myriad areas of our lives and studies, right in our own communities and neighborhoods.

Cecelia Harber, Class of 2020, who is enrolled in an Abnormal Psychology class with the GOA, inspired by a fellow student’s senior thesis and other GOA work, explored a possible genetic component to eating disorders.

Jamie Walker, Class of 2022, who is enrolled in Climate Change and Global Inequality, explored sustainable dieting, inspired by an interview with Ms. Kramer.

Kelsey Morse, Class of 2021, who is enrolled in Game Theory, connects what he has learned in his CCES Economics class with a mathematical look as to whether the benefits of raising the minimum wage outweigh the cons.

Ladds Goldsmith, Class of 2023, also enrolled in Game Theory, digs into his personal interest in fishing to investigate the effects of overfishing on an ecosystem.

William Lei, Class of 2022, also enrolled in Game Theory, explores gun control regulation in the US and prevention of mass shootings and gun violence.

Through participation in the catalyst conference our students are not only given the opportunity to dig deeper into a course related topic that they are passionate about, but also by connecting it to one of the UN's 17 sustainable development goals, they continue to grow as global citizens. Engaging with others who visit their webpages, as well as interacting with students in other courses and countries, is an invaluable experience that further develops our students' openness to multiple perspectives and the sharing of new ideas.

Congratulations to all of these students involved in sparking change in our community!

Projects for Kelsey and Ladd had not yet been uploaded to the GOA Catalyst Conference at the time of publishing. Check back for updates.
